Okay guys. The big day is here! I finally get to show you our new kitchen! 🙂
I have been dreaming of white kitchens for years {as you may be able to tell from my Pinterest board!} so I was SO excited that we were finally able to make some changes to our kitchen. Our home is about 20 years old, and I believe that the kitchen was all original to the initial build. If you want to see the kitchen BEFORE photos, check out this post HERE.
We had our cabinets taken out to be spray painted and, I must say, that it was totally worth the extra money. They were primed and had FIVE coats of Benjamin Moore Simply White. Yes, I can only imagine how long that would have taken me! You can no longer see the wood grain and they wipe down beautifully.
We kept all of our old appliances {which we have only had for a few years} with the exception of getting a new dishwasher. You can click on the following links to learn more about our fridge organization, how to clean an oven, and the best way to clean a glass top stove.
So our countertops are a bit of a story. I spent almost a month trying to figure out what kind of countertop surface we were going to use and finally decided on quartz. I did a lot of research on all of the different kitchen countertops and will be writing a post on the pros and cons of each. Hopefully it will help you out and save you some time if you are trying to figure out what material you would like to use.
So once I had decided on quartz, I needed to pick the color. After a week of going back and forth from the kitchen countertop store with different samples, I finally decided on Storm Grey from Dupont. Unfortunately, there ended up being a little mix up in communication and the installer put in Stone Grey from Caesarstone. I pretty much had a small stroke.
In the end, we did stay with the stone grey quartz. Although it wasn’t as much of a contrast I was originally looking for, it did tie in really nicely with the grey in the marble subway tile {from Home Deopt} that we used. And, of course, the fact that it was almost $2000 cheaper pretty much sealed the deal. 🙂
The tile backsplash made such a HUGE difference in the look of the kitchen. We had the wall tiled behind the stove as well as a half wall along the windows. I was kind of hoping to do a full wall there as well, but due to the uneven layout of the cabinets on either side of the wall, we decided to stick with the half wall.
The windows were framed out {which also made a huge difference}and painted with Simply White and the walls were painted with Old Soul by Benjamin Moore. Since we have such an open floor plan, this color is used a lot in our home and I love it! It is a soft “griege” color and can really has a lot of variance in different lights – sometime it looks more grey and sometimes more beige.
We had the countertops extended out by a few inches in the little bar area and just that little extra space makes it so much more functional. It’s a great place for the kids to eat their breakfast or for me to sit down to have some tea. The stools were from Target and a great deal at less than $40 each.
And just to give you an idea of the rest of the space, the kitchen eating area is just behind the breakfast bar. It gets lots of natural light and I love the open floor plan.
As you walk towards the formal dining room we have a bit more cupboard space that we use for our pantry and cleaning supplies. On the other side of the wall is a desk and our kitchen command centre. I put this together about a year ago and it makes such a big difference in keeping our kitchen counters clear and clutter free!
If you would like to see more areas in our home, I am currently working on putting a full home tour together for you. It is still a work in progress but you can see where I am at by clicking HERE.
Special thanks to my friend Rose, from Rosalee Roy Photgraphy who took the photos for me!

Your kitchen looks stunning. I love the white cabinets and, even if it was a mistake, the grey counter looks fantastic with the white cupboards and the backsplash.

Thanks! I actually really like the countertops now that everything is completed. Just a bit of an initial shock when the wrong ones were installed!

Hello – oh my so beautiful! May I ask, and I hope you don’t mind – could you please source the rug for me? I’ve been looking and looking – thank you so much! And I love your blog – really wonderful, great ideas and inspiration. Thank you.
Jenn Lifford says
The rug is from Pier 1. It was a little pricey but I loved the colors and it is made from memory foam so it is super comfortable under your feet when you are doing dishes. 🙂

I love white kitchens, but alas, my sweet hubby loves WOOD. I’m ready for a change — but I don’t think it will ever be to white. (sad face). Your kitchen is GORGEOUS Jenn!
lynne says
The kitchen looks wonderful. I am contemplating doing the same thing to my kitchen. When you said that you sent out the cabinets to be sprayed, do you mean the cabinets were actually removed from the wall (doors and complete cabinets, as well) or just the doors?
Jenn Lifford says
Just the doors were removed for spraying and the cabinet frames were just hand painted. 🙂
Laurel Stephens says
Your kitchen turned out beautifully. I love your quartz counters, too!

It’s beautify. I’ve been wanting to paint ours white but haven’t been able to decide what route to take to do it. Do you mind if I ask about how much it cost to spray your cabinets? Thanks

Jenn Lifford says
I didn’t actually get a separate quote on the cabinets as there were other things that were also done within the same quote. I would guess they would have been between $1500 and $2000 including all of the paint and labor.
Holly C says
Where are you located? I’ve gotten two paint estimates and they were both over $3000, and my kitchen is smaller.
Jenn Lifford says
I’m in Mission, BC. The contractor just gave us a total quote on the kitchen with everything included (rather than breaking it down individually) so I was just guesstimating what the cost of the painting was. If you would like the name of the painters, let me know and I can ask our contractor.
Melanie Brannen says
Your backsplash is exactly what I need–is it the 3 x 6″ honed Greecian white subway tile from Home Depot? Thanks
Jenn Lifford says
The backsplash is from Home Depot but they are marble subway tiles. It came in 12×12 pieces. Hope that helps!
Shannon Forbis says
I saw your kitchen on Pinterest and fell in love, do you mind telling me what the paint color on the walls is?
Jenn Lifford says
Thanks! The paint color is Old Soul by Benjamin Moore. 🙂
Ali says
Hi,do you have a dishwasher in your kitchen?,I can’t see it.My kitchen is EXACTLY laid out like yours, but we have a dishwasher
Jenn Lifford says
Oh yes! I could never live without a dishwasher!! You can see it in the corner in the first photo. 🙂
Alayne says
I’m still trying to find the exact backsplash from Home Depot but can’t. Has anyone found it? 🙂
Jenn Lifford says
I think this is it…
http://www.homedepot.com/p/MS-International-Greecian-White-12-in-x-12-in-Polished-Beveled-Marble-Mesh-Mounted-Mosaic-Floor-and-Wall-Tile-GRE-2X4PB/203447807
Alayne says
Thank you! I bought a sample from Home Depot and it looks REALLY white and almost monochromatic, but your backsplash looks much more “colorful”. Is there any way it was something else? 🙂
Jenn Lifford says
Hmmm… there was only the one marble tile when I purchased mine and it looks like it is just the one of the website too. There is always natural fluctuation in colors – have you checked the other boxes or even another Home Depot to see if there is any difference? I know when I bought our marble floor tile in the bathroom, I had to take a few tiles back as they looked completely different.
alayne says
Thank you so much for your patience with me – you were right (of course!)! We ended up going to 4 different Home Depots to get the right color variance, but it turned out beautifully. Thanks again 🙂
jessie says
Random question…. where is your soap dish tray and bottles from??
Jenn Lifford says
The tray and the glass bottle is from Target {in the bathroom section} and the other handsoap and lotion is from Caldrea. 🙂
Ginny says
I love everything…..so bright and inviting! Would you mind telling me where you got the teal purse that’s on the chair in the office area? Thanks.
Jenn Lifford says
Lol! I think I get more questions about that purse than anything else! 🙂 I got it a couple of years ago at The Shoe Warehouse here in Canada. The brand is L. Credi. Hope that helps!
Beth davis says
Your kitchen looks great. What kind of lighting did you choose in your kitchen and is it bright enough?
Jenn Lifford says
We didn’t really choose the lighting – we just went with what was already there due to budget. 😉 We have under the cabinet lighting as well as a 3 bulb flush mount in the centre of the kitchen and a 3 bulb flush mount between the desk and the pantry. I rarely use the under the counter lighting although my husband really likes it. We have never really had any concerns with the kitchen not being bright enough.
Elaine O'Brien says
How has the marble backsplash held up? Is it hard to maintain? I picked out this same backsplash and then got a little worried about the marble and haven’t purchased it yet!
Jenn Lifford says
Other than occasionally wiping it down, we haven’t done any maintenance on it and it’s held up great. I think we’ve had it up for 6 years now?
Elaine O'Brien says
That’s such good news! It’s such a beautiful tile! Thanks for the info!
Jenn Lifford says
Hope you like yours! 🙂
