Summer Decor Ideas
I love coming up with a few vignette ideas each season. This hutch just off our our kitchen is one of the first places that gets switched up each season. Today I thought I would share my process for easily switching it up each season.
Start with a clean slate.
Before I start, I always clear the shelves and give everything a good cleaning. I like to start with a clean slate so I’m not locked in to where items have to go. It’s all about having fun with a little trial and error!
Choose your items or theme.
Gather any items that you think you might want to include in your shelf styling. You might pick a particular theme that you would like to go with, a specific color scheme, or even just a general feel. You want items of various sizes, heights, and depth.
We like to eat outdoors in the summer months so I decided to style our shelves with all of our outdoor dinnerware and everything we need for a night of s’mores and hot chocolate. I I also gathered up a few other items that worked with the blue and white color scheme. I made the s’mores labels a couple of years ago and the S’more the Merrier printable last year for our DIY s’mores bar.
If you want to see what everything looks like once it’s styled outside, you can see our summer tablescape here.
Place your larger items first.
Place your items that take up the most amount of space first. I have a couple of staple items such as the Bistro box and cake stands that I tend to use in most of my seasonal vignettes. Since they’re neutral, they go with pretty much any color scheme or design. If you don’t have enough height you can always stack items to get the size you want. As a rough fule of thumb, I like to work in diagnols with items that are similar in color and/or type. For example, the cake stands and stacked white plates form a triangle rather than being placed on the same side of the shelves.
Add layers.
Start to layer in the smaller items working from largest to smallest. If you don’t know exactly where to place items, just get started. Sometimes you just need to see what you have and play around with it. Think of grouping items roughly into groups of three {or other odd number}. Add some fresh or faux greenery to bring a little life to your display. I always love a little pop of green! You can also play around with adding some various textures such as the rolled up tea towels, tobasco basket, and wood beads to soften the look.
Final touches.
There is always a certain amount of tinkering involved with any shelf styling. You may need to move a few items around, take something away, or add in an extra touch or two to find the balance that you would like. Pay attention to how your eye moves through the display and the balance of color and size. Sometimes you might just need to step back for a day or two to see what might be a little off.
I hope this inspires you to play around with some items that you have to create a pretty summer vignette or styled shelving unit. Remember that there really is no right and wrong – just go with what you like!

“I like to work in diagnols with items that are similar in color and/or type.” Did you mean diagonals?
