DIY Snowball Cookies in a Jar
I’m currently working on pulling out of my Christmas decor {and my house looks like a bomb just went off!} so I decided I better stick with a recipe project for this one. lol! Snowball cookies have been one of my favorite Christmas cookies ever since I was little. My Grandma used to make them and they were always the first cookies I went for on the cookie platter.
I thought that it would be a fun idea to package these snowballs up in a cute little cookie jar. They make a delicious Christmas gift and can also make a pretty addition to your kitchen holiday decor. Once you have the cookies made, the jars just take minutes to put together so you can make one up for everyone you know. The only problem is keeping the cookie jar stocked!
Pecan Snowball Cookies Recipe
Pecan Snowball Cookies
These melt-in-your-mouth pecan snowball cookies are quick and easy to make and are always a hit for Christmas cookie exchanges. Definitely a Christmas favorite!
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup finely chopped pecans (or other nut of choice)
- powdered sugar
- peppermint dust or finely crushed peppermint {optional}
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350F. In a large bowl beat the butter on medium speed for 30 seconds. Add the sugar, brown sugar, and salt and beat until combined. Beat in the vanilla and then the flour. Stir in the nuts.
-
Shape the dough into 1-inch balls (1 tbsp.) and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 12 minutes or just until the bottoms begin to brown. Remove and cool on a wire rack.
-
Put some powdered sugar in a ziploc bag. Place a few cookies in the bag at at a time and gently shake to coat.
Tips for the Best Snowball Cookies
I’ve put together a few tips for making the best snowball cookies as well as some ideas for switching things up a bit. Give them a try and let me know what you think!
- Use butter at room temperature for the best cookies.
- Roll the snowball cookies in the powdered sugar twice! First when they are still slightly warm to give them more of a creamy glaze and then a second time when completely cool or closer to when you’ll be serving them.
- Switch things up by using a different nut such as almonds, walnuts or pistachios.
- Try adding some peppermint dust {this one is from Trader Joes} with the powdered sugar. It’s so good!
- For a fun Christmas twist add some Christmas colored sprinkles to the cookie dough before baking.
- If you want to make these cookies ahead of time, they freeze really well! Just put them in a freezer safe container with parchment or wax paper between the layers. Once thawed, give them a sprinkle with the powdered sugar before serving.

Printable Snowballs Gift Tag
I’ve made two versions of the tag – one with ‘From” on it so you can use it as a gift, and a plain one if you just want to use it for a little cookie jar of your own. The mason jars keep the cookies super fresh! I also have a full size 8×10 print too if you’d like a bigger version to frame. 🙂

I am interested in the beautiful white Christmas trees next to the snowball cookies. Could you tell me if you made them or where you bought them?
Jenn Lifford says
I bought them at World Market a few years ago and love them. I did find very similar ones at Hobby Lobby last year but haven’t been there this year so not sure if they still have them.
