Create a pretty Easter display on a shelf or hutch with these simple seasonal styling tips. Easy ideas to quickly switch up your decor each season.
Easter Display
I love to switch up our decor each season. A few little seasonal displays around the house can really freshen things up. This hutch just off our our kitchen is one of the first places that gets switched up each season. Just adding a few seasonal touches can totally change the look and feel from season to season. Today, I thought I’d show you our simple Easter display that I put together.
Shelf or Hutch Styling Tips
Changing up your shelves each season doesn’t have to take a lot of time or new items. You really only need to add a few favorite seasonal pieces and play around with staple items that you already have. Today I thought I would share my process for easily switching it up each season.
Start with a clean slate.
Before I start, I always clear the shelves and give everything a good cleaning. I like to start with a clean slate so I’m not locked in to where items have to go. It’s all about having fun with a little trial and error!
Choose some basic neutral pieces.
If you have shelves or a hutch that you like to change up seasonally, it’s helpful to to have some basic pieces that you can use year round. Choose more neutral items or pieces that can be used in a variety of ways. I have a couple of staple items such as the Bistro box, basic dishware, and cake stands that I tend to use in most of my seasonal vignettes. Since they’re neutral, they go with pretty much any color scheme or design. Many of these items are pieces that I use when we have company over or need a little extra serving ware. Functional and pretty are the best!
Place your larger items first.
Place your items that take up the most amount of space first. If you don’t have enough height you can always stack items to get the size you want. As a rough rule of thumb, I like to work in diagonals with items that are similar in color and/or type. For example, the “heavier” items {the Bistro box, large bowl, and stacked white plates on the cake stand} form a triangle rather than being placed on the same side of the shelves. And the cloches are placed on opposite sides of the hutch to balance each other out.
Add in a few seasonal touches.
Gather any items that you think you might want to include in your shelf styling. You might pick a particular theme that you would like to go with, a specific color scheme, or even just a general feel. You want items of various sizes, heights, and depth. To dress the hutch up for Easter, I used some white bunny dishes and bowls and a couple of faux chocolate bunny containers that I found at the dollar store. They’re kind of hard to see in the photos but they’re under the cloches with some moss. 🙂
Add layers.
Start to layer in the smaller items working from largest to smallest. If you don’t know exactly where to place items, just get started. Sometimes you just need to see what you have and play around with it. Think of grouping items roughly into groups of three {or other odd number}. Add some fresh or faux greenery to bring a little life to your display. I always love a little pop of green! You can also play around with adding some various textures such as the rolled up tea towels, tobacco basket, and wood beads to soften the look.
The Hippity Hoppity printable will be up on the blog tomorrow, so check back for that if you’d like a copy. I hope you found these little shelf styling tips helpful and give it a go in your own home!
