Hello! I’m back with another 10 minute Decorating Post! This month, my blogging friends and I are all sharing some quick and easy fall decorating ideas. I’m going to be starting off with this easy lighted fall terrarium. I also have a giveaway at the end of the post from 46 and Spruce for a floating orb garden kit and terrarium tool kit that would be perfect for this project. So….don’t forget to enter before you leave!
How to Make a Terrarium
To create your terrarium, you need to start with some kind of glass, open-top jar or container. Chances are, you probably already have something around your home that you can use, so take a look around and see what you can come up with. Once you have your container, you’re ready to start creating.
- Layer 1 – Place a 1 – 1 1/2 inch layer of small rocks in the bottom of the container to allow for drainage. If you’re going to be using faux plants you can always skip this step, but the rocks add a pretty touch and make the terrarium look more realistic.
- Layer 2 – Add a thin layer of green moss on top of the stones.
- Layer 3 – Place the potting soil on top of the moss.
- Layer 4 – Add plants, moss, stones, or other decorative items to create your personalized look. Generally it’s easiest to start with the larger plants first and then fill in as desired with the smaller items. Succulents, of course, are the most popular to add and are quite easily taken care of {even if you don’t have a green thumb!}. If you’re not sure what succulents to use 46 and Spruce has put together this cute infographic for you.
How to Choose the Best Succulents for your Terrarium
Now since this is a fall post, I went a slightly different route with my terrarium and added a couple of faux succulents, some white pumpkins, a little moss, and a garland of bittersweet.
I also love lights, so I pulled out some of my Christmas twinkle lights and added them too. The lights are just on a timer, so once they’re set the first time, they come on at the same time every day afterwards. Since I used faux succulents and do not have to water my terrarium, I just buried the battery pack as much as possible in the soil. One of the little pumpkins covers the rest of it up.
Doesn’t it look pretty all lit up?
To complete the centerpiece, I added more white pumpkins of various sizes, pinecones, more bittersweet, and a couple of tall candle holders.
Everything came together in about 10 minutes and I was able to make most of it with items that I already had on hand.

I have had Multiple Sclerosis for over half my life, but I can still remember how much I loved gardening. I feel this would be the best alternative. My family and neighbors tend to be uncomfortable when I crawl around the yard to dig in the dirt. I realize I won’t get that awesome dirt under your nails feeling, but it would be something to make you smile and say I did that. I may never be able to have as clean, organized and decorated home as yours but I will always enjoy reading about your ideas and projects and admiring the pictures you post
Jenn Lifford says
Sorry to hear that you’re dealing with MS, but yes, this could be a nice alternative for you! There are so many pretty options for terrariums these days and you can make them as simple or ornate as you would like. And I always manage to get dirt under my nails even when I do these little projects!! 🙂
