Hey guys! Sorry I am late for this month’s Household Organization Diet, but you will have this month and next month to complete your tasks so there is still lots of time!
This month we will be working on cleaning and organizing the family room and/or living room. I will also be working on my posts for Organizing the Holidays {you can see the first post HERE} as I felt that it would be more helpful for you all if I posted it earlier than December. I always like to get as much done as possible in November so I can take a step back in December to just relax and enjoy the holidays.
Our family room is probably one of the most decluttered spaces in our home. After all of the work last month on our basement organization {which was our worst space!}, I feel like it is a well deserved break! Now that our kids are older, their toys are all just kept in their rooms and we don’t really have a whole lot of other “stuff” that we keep in the family room. That being said, there are always things that can be paired down a bit {and a lot of deep cleaning that needs to be done} so a yearly go-over is always helpful.
So here is the plan for how to organize the living room this month…

To keep myself on track, I also like to use a monthly calendar to write down when I plan on doing each of the tasks. You can read more about how I use the calendar HERE. I have included the November calendar as well as a blank December calendar for you this month.DOWNLOAD THE NOVEMBER CALENDAR HERE

If you have a lot of clutter in your space, read this post first and spend some time decluttering.
How to Declutter the Living Room
Once you have decluttered, you need to look at everything that is left that you need to find storage for. Look for coffee tables or end tables with drawers or other closed storage to hide items that you would like out of sight. Pick up some decorative bins or baskets to hold toys, magazines, or extra blankets. If you have items in the room that you don’t actually use there, find alternate places to store them or donate them if they are no longer loved and needed.
We didn’t have a lot of storage in our living room, so I built these DIY wooden storage crates a couple of years ago. They look pretty in the space and also provide a lot of functional {out of sight!} storage.
For more living room design inspiration, I have also put together a few of my favorite living and family rooms for you.
Lake house living room from Simple Stylings.
Modern nautical style cottage from Style at Home.
Thrifty Living Room from City Farmhouse.
Lakehome living room from Muskoka Living.
Small space living room from Home Adore.
Beach Cottage Living Room from Home Bunch.
So there you go – the last set of tasks for the 2015 Household Organization Diet! Congratulations if you have made it this far with me! I hope that your spaces are feeling lighter and that you are finding your home a more relaxing and peaceful place to be. If you missed out this year {or just want to join in again!}, look for the 2016 Household Organization Diet on January 1! You can read more about what it is all about HERE.
I will also be back a little later this month with some tips for getting those carpets and upholstery cleaned!
