Hey Everyone!! I hope you are all enjoying your weekend! After waking up to SNOW on Thursday and rain on Friday, I am hoping for a little more sun this weekend. I am in serious need of some nice weather {or a vacation to some nice weather!} and I can’t wait to pull out my flip flops! If you are somewhere sunny and hot, please send a little bit my way. Pretty please?
For those of you who read my handprint Valentine’s post, you know how much I love a good keepsake handprint craft! So {of course} I had to create an Easter edition!
I was really happy to finish this little chick. It was one of those projects that didn’t quite turn out as planned! But in the end, who can go wrong with sweet little handprints?
MATERIALS
- 16×20 canvas
- paint
- painter’s tape
- Chevron stencil {you can get one to print here}
- scrapbook paper {yellow and white}
- vinyl or stickers for the letters
- orange felt
TO DO
- Paint your canvas a light blue.
- Trace a Chevron pattern onto your canvas. I tried to download one from the Silhouette site but for some reason it wasn’t working. I finally gave up and ended up finding another one here.
- Using painter’s tape, mask off the chevron pattern and paint. I was planning to do the pattern over the whole canvas but changed my mind. {One of the many changes!}
- Using vinyl, cut out your title {my fonts are Smiley Monster and My Own Topher}. If you don’t have a Silhouette, you can always use letter stickers or a stencil. Attach to the top and bottom of the canvas.
- I was originally going to paint my chick and handprints onto the canvas but remembered that I had some yellow flocked heat transfer that came with my Silhouette. Since I didn’t have any plans for it, I figured that I would use it up. I cut out an oval shape for the chick and traced Connor’s handprints onto the flocking. When I tried to iron it on though, it wouldn’t stick. {I’m not sure if I wasn’t following the directions properly or if it was just because I was transferring it onto canvas} I ended up just peeling the clear part off and ironing directly onto the flocking with a light towel over top.
- Here is where I made another change of plans. I really didn’t like the look of the heat transfer on the canvas. You could really see the overlap between the hands and the chick body. You can’t see it too well in the photo but trust me, it didn’t look good.
- Since the heat transfer was not going to come off without some serious damage to the canvas, I took some scrapbook paper and cut out another oval to place over the chick body. I put some orange felt on the top of the head {what is that thing actually called?}and attached the paper with some small glue dots for a little dimension.
- For the beak, cut out a diamond shape from the orange felt. Fold it in half and glue the bottom half down on the chick. I used some left over black vinyl from the wording to cut out the eyes.
- Cut out an eggshell using white cardstock. I attached mine with thicker pop dots than I used on the chick for another dimensional layer.
And there is your cute little chickadee!!
When I was first thinking about this project, I thought I would be able to fit both of my of chickadees on one canvas but I could only fit one. No worries though. Matthew and I have another plan for his!
