Create a beautiful fresh greenery Christmas basket wreath for your front porch or other holiday decor. Quick and easy to put together with that delicious scent of fresh greens!
Fresh Greenery Christmas Wreath
I absolutely love the smell and textures of fresh greenery at Christmas time. Since we switched to artificial Christmas trees a few years ago, I always try to find other ways to incorporate those fresh greens into our holiday decor. This pretty Christmas basket wreath creates a cozy touch to our front porch – warm, glowing fairy lights, snowy branches, and those delicious scents of fresh cut greens.
DIY Christmas Basket Wreath Tutorial
This DIY Christmas basket wreath is super easy to put together and can be finished in less than 30 minutes. Add in your favorite embellishments for a pretty customized touch!
Materials
- basket with flat back {I purchased this one from Amazon, but this is another style that would work}
- a variety of fresh greenery – I used some pine, cedar {two varieties}, and seeded eucalyptus. The eucalyptus does dry out quite quickly but I still love the look. Using a mixture of greenery such as pine, cedar, boxwood, spruce, juniper, or fir adds extra texture and depth to your wreath. Ideally, you want some with more of a solid structure and some that are droopier. If you’re lucky enough to have your own trees, just cut off some branches and get to work. If you need to purchase it, look at your local garden centres, supermarkets, or Christmas tree farms.
- faux snowy branches. Look for stems that can be bent and will hold their shape. You could also try mixing in some real branches too. Don’t be afraid to cut off pieces of the branches so they better fit the space.
- floral foam {optional}. I didn’t use any for my basket but if you don’t want it as full or are using a larger basket it may be needed.
- clippers
- mini lights. Look for ones that have an automatic timer to turn on and off so you don’t need to worry about them. Costco had a great deal on these last time I went.
Instructions
- Lay out your greenery. You want to start working with the biggest, sturdiest, bushiest of branches. I usually try to get three pieces – one taller one and two slightly smaller ones that are similar in size. Place the tallest one in the middle of the basket and the two smaller ones on either side. I used a sturdy piece of cedar for my center piece and then two fir branches on either side. A fir branch would also work great for the large middle piece.
- Since my basket was really narrow in depth, the branches stayed in place nicely. If you find that they flop around too much you can place some floral foam in the bottom of the basket to hold the stems exactly where you want them. If you don’t have any floral foam, crumpled up newspaper in between the branches will often do the trick as well.
- Place some droopier greenery on either side of the front of the basket to drape down. Continue to build up the layers of greenery moving from larger branches to smaller clippings until you have your desired shape.
- Use the faux branches to fill in any gaps or to add some stability where the real branches are too droopy Bend the stems and fluff the leaves until it starts to fill out the way you like it. Finally take some smaller pine cone stems or other embellishments and place them in any remaining gaps.
- If you like, you can add other decorative touches such as Christmas bells, ribbon, or signs to the front of the basket.
This is one of those projects that’s pretty much impossible to mess up! Just keep fiddling with it until you get the look you want. And have fun with it! I think this project would make the perfect Christmas craft night with some friends.
The other thing I love about this basket wreath is that it will last all the way through the winter months. You can easily replace any branches that dry out but, if you’re in a colder climate, this should last for a few months at least.
