Holiday Housewalk 2021
Welcome to our holiday home! I’m so excited to be participating in Jennifer Rizzo’s Holiday Housewalk again this year and can’t wait to show you all of the beautiful homes on tour with me. This was the very first Christmas Home Tour series that I followed way back in 2011 and it has provided me with so much Christmas decor inspiration over the years. I hope you enjoy the tours as much as I do.
If you’ve missed out on the previous homes on this tour, you can start from the beginning by visiting Jen’s Day One post HERE. From there you can “walk” virtually from house to house and enjoy the variety of Christmas decor and design styles. Grab a mug of hot chocolate, sit back, and get ready to be inspired!
For those of you coming over from Cuckoo 4 Design – welcome! Julia’s home is always beautifully decked out for the holidays so be sure to drop in and say hello if you missed it!
Our Festive Christmas Kitchen Decor
Today, I’m going to be showing you around our kitchen. My favorite part about decorating is working on all of the little details, so I really wanted to show you how adding a few simple touches here and there can really make a big impact on your space.
Last year, I did a more subdued Christmas kitchen using greens, whites, metallics and some pops of dried oranges, so this year I really wanted to bring back the red. It’s definitely a lot more playful, and filled with lots of fun Santa-inspired decor.
I picked up these Santa mugs {along with a Santa sugar and cream set} last year at the dollar store and they served as the inspiration for this year’s Christmas decor. Sometimes it’s the little inexpensive finds that end up being your favorite!
Easy Ways to Add Christmas Decor to Your Kitchen
Whether you like to go full out with your Christmas decor or just prefer subtle touches here and there, there are lots of ways that you can add that magical Christmas touch to your kitchen. It usually ends up being one of the main spaces that people end up hanging out when you’re entertaining, so you still want it to feel warm and festive.
Over the years, I’ve developed a simple routine for adding our seasonal decor in the kitchen. Even though I change up the details each year, my thought process behind it all still generally stays the same. So today, I wanted to share with you some simple ways to add that festive touch to your own kitchen.
Create a Christmas vignette.
I always like to start off with some kind of Christmas display that sets the color scheme and overall feel for the rest of the kitchen. The far corner of our kitchen works well for this as it keeps things out of the way while still being a focal point when you walk in the room.
Using a tray for a base helps to keep everything corralled together and makes things feel a little more put together. It also makes it easier for cleaning the counters when needed!
When you’re working on putting the display together, group similar items together and try to add items with various heights to make it more visually appealing. If you need to add height use small cake trays or wood risers. Pretty sprigs of greenery are my go-to items to fill in any gaps and pull the vignette together. {NOTE: I like to buy faux branches for this and then cut them down to various smaller sizes.}
Dress up the sink.
One of the first things I do at the start of each season, is to switch up our dish soap and hand soap. It’s funny how certain scents just makes it feel more festive!
I usually go back and forth each year between the Mrs. Meyers peppermint scent and the pine scent. I love both of them and they definitely make washing dishes a little more enjoyable.
Switch out the artwork.
Art work is one of the easiest things to change up for the different seasons and doesn’t require any additional space. I just keep all of my old prints tucked in behind the current print and switch them around. You can find lots of different free printable options out there in a variety of styles and color schemes. {And I have tons of free Christmas printables from you to choose from HERE!}
I always switch out this print by our cutting board and create a printable that goes with our color scheme. This Rudolph’s Milk and Cookie Co. sign is a favorite of mine from a couple of years ago, and I thought it went well with the Santa decor.
Put together a hot chocolate or other hot beverage bar.
One of my favorite things to do each winter is set up a hot beverage bar. I don’t actually drink coffee but I love hot chocolate, lattes, and other steamed milk drinks.
This year I actually have two hot beverage bars set up – a hot chocolate bar cart in our family room {I’ll show you this next week!} and this little latte bar in the kitchen.
I purchased this milk frother in the summer and I love it! I often have a steamed milk in the evening or make chai lattes. It also makes the best hot chocolate.
I made a variety of coffee bar labels and syrup labels a few months ago for our fall beverage bar, and used the chai label for this one.
Use napkins.
There are SO many cute napkins out there and they can totally be used to add some inexpensive decor to your kitchen. As a bonus you can use them up throughout the season and don’t have to store them for next year! The napkins can be used as a focal decor item or just placed underneath items for some added color.
Mix your seasonal decor with functional items.
If you have a small kitchen or don’t like a lot of clutter, mix in just a few of your favorite Christmas decor pieces with your regular kitchen items. I added a Christmas tree to our kitchen utensil tray and then added a little faux greenery and the cutest kissing Santa and Mrs. Claus salt and pepper shakers.
Aren’t they the sweetest?
Display a Christmas Centerpiece
The centerpiece is another item that I like to switch up from season to season. I used a similar design to this last year in our Christmas dining room, but I really love this basket and wanted to use it again.
The basket is filled with snow covered greenery, large pinecones, ornaments and some little white bells. There’s also a string of lights, so it has a pretty glow at night too.
Style a shelfie.
If you have a shelf or hutch, have some fun styling it with your seasonal favorites! I used our hutch to hold some of serving platters and my favorite raccoon teapot and mug set.
Little pops of red and green throughout create a truly festive Christmas feeling.
I rolled up any of our extra tea towels for some extra texture and color – and they’re still really handy if I need to use them!
Add twinkle lights.
You can’t have Christmas decor without twinkle lights! They just make everything look prettier. Add them to a vignette or tray, place them in a bowl with ornaments for a centerpiece, or string them with a garland.
I always use the battery operated twinkle lights that come with a timer so I don’t have to remember to turn them on and off each day. I just set them once to come on when it starts to get dark and they stay on for 6 hours.
The lights just add such a pretty glow!
