Rustic Farmhouse Style Fall Front Porch
It has definitely been feeling like fall around here. Usually our Septembers are still quite summer-like, but it’s been a very rainy September this year. I’m hoping that we still get some of those beautiful, sunny fall days, but for now I had to settle for taking photos in the rain. To brighten things up on the darker days, I dressed up our front porch with lots of pretty fall colors. I was originally going to use more muted tones but those brighter fall colors just kind of crept in!
I found this rustic step ladder at one of my friend’s flower shops {Maple Ridge Florist if you’re local!} and knew that I wanted to use it on our front porch. I pulled out some other rustic, farmhouse-style pieces that I thought would go with it and played around with the arrangements until I had things the way I liked. I usually do a pretty symmetrical display on either side of the door so it took me a little time to get things balanced with this more asymmetrical design.
Fall Front Porch Decor Tips
If you’re looking to add some fall vibes to your own front porch, I’ve put together a few easy ideas to spruce up your space. Even just a few simple touches can make a big impact and it makes for such a nice welcome when you come home each night!
Give everything a good cleaning.
Before you get started with the decor, take a little time to remove everything from your porch, and then give it a sweep and quick power wash or hose down. Knock down any cobwebs that may be in the corners and wipe down the front door. Taking everything off the porch also allows you to get a fresh look at how you want to decorate the space. There’s nothing like a nice clean slate!
Choose a color scheme or design idea.
I always find that having some kind of color scheme {or inspiration piece to pull colors from} helps to get me started on a space. This year I used a variety of fall colors that were inspired from the Welcome Fall sign – gold, greens, browns and oranges. It’s a pretty loose color scheme but it provided a good starting point when I was picking my items to display.
Add some flowers.
It seems like mums are pretty much the go-to fall flowers. You can buy them everywhere, they last for a long time, and they’re generally quite inexpensive. Don’t forget about other options for fall flowers though. Dahlias, celosia, marigolds, flowering kale, and fountain grass are all beautiful fall choices that will add color and interest to your fall front porch. You can even throw in some faux fall leaves too to fill in some of the gaps!
Dress up the door.
A wreath is probably the easiest way to add a seasonal touch to your front entry. I was going to use my copper hoop wreath, but I ended up moving that inside and using this golden oak leaf wreath instead. The oak leaf tied into the colors of the mums better and worked well with the yellow blanket that I had hanging from the ladder.
Pick pumpkins.
What’s a fall front porch without pumpkins? There are so many different pumpkin varieties and colors to choose from these days that it can be hard to decide which ones to get! I got some muted orange and green ones this year along with my usual white pumpkins and I love all of the different shapes and textures. Faux pumpkins are also looking better and better each year, so feel free to mix in some faux ones as well. No one will ever know!
Light it up.
I always like to have lights on our front porch – especially during the fall and winter. With the shorter days, it’s always dark when we get home from work and it’s nice to have a warm glow of lights to welcome us home. To keep things easy, use solar lights or battery-operated lights with timers that come on automatically so you don’t have to worry about remembering to turn them on and off.
I hope you enjoyed our little outdoor space! Fall really is such a beautiful season!
