Faux Shiplap Mantel
If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you may know that our mantel recently got a bit of a makeover. I have been wanting to get rid of the alcoves in our mantel for a couple of years now and finally did it! We ended up putting faux shiplap up {like we did in our front entry and bathroom} to cover over the existing alcoves. In case you’re wondering, there was nothing actually wrong with the alcoves, I just needed a change after living with them for 17 years. There’s really only so much you can do to decorate an alcove like that! The boards are just covering them up, so we can easily remove them in a couple of years if we change our mind.
Here’s our fall family room and fall mantel from last year with the alcoves. I’ve had faux stems in those alcoves for as long as I can remember and I could never figure out anything else to do with them. I was just ready for a change.
Our Fall Mantel Decor
Since we just finished doing the mantel, I’m still playing around with how I want to decorate it. But, for now, our fall mantel is done. I used a fairly neutral color scheme with some traditional fall colors thrown in there along with lots of natural elements. Pine cones, pumpkins, and wheat, oh my!
For the top of the mantel, I layered some mini lights over a faux pepper berry fall garland and then added some pine cones and a couple of varieties of white pumpkins. The wheat in some dollar store glass jars added a little bit of height and kept with the natural elements. It’s pretty simple, but that’s kind of what I’m craving right now.
I used a sugar mold filled with pinecones and glass candle votives for the center of the mantel. I always love the weathered look of wood against white. It looks really pretty at night when it’s all lit up with the mini lights.
The one requirement from my husband {and the kids!} when I re-did the mantel was to keep the clock. {I didn’t keep the same clock but got this one.} We’ve always had a clock there and any time I tried to take it down to replace it with something else, they always requested that I put it back. Apparently, no other clocks in the house are good enough. 😉
I kept the shelves quite simple as well, and tried to keep with the same natural elements for styling.
And there’s our fall mantel! I’ll have some full room shots with it next week when I show you our full fall family room tour. If you have any questions or decorating ideas for me, just let me know!

What wouldwe dowithout naturaalkelementsfromour yards?? I love pine cones for dexoraating.Found a decent inexpensive dough tray at HL on sale so guess where my natural elements will be placed? on our shutter shelf over our couch.Better known as our mantel for the holidays.,Have so much fun decorating that crazy shelf for all the holidays. Whatever doesn’t fit on shelf seems to get dumped on our coffee table, better known as an outdoor patio table hubs found where he used to work.
Love how you decorated your wonderful mantel, very pretty and so snazzy looking, love the lanterns. I have a red berry wreath will dig out to put on shutter shelf. Bought it in KY or MT. Had a white berry wreath also but who knows where it’s gotten to, have moved too many times and packed up. Probably out getting dusty in our “stuff” shed., lol. Enjoy rest of week
