The holidays are coming and I’m so excited to start decking the halls! If you’ve been following me on Instagram you may have seen a few sneak peeks at some upcoming holiday projects {as well as the current state of chaos in my house!!} I don’t really have a very long decorating attention span, so I have a really hard time finishing one area before pulling out a couple of more boxes and starting on another. Is decorating A.D.D. a thing? 😉
One of the first things that I do at the start of a new season, is switch out some of the scents in our home and Christmas is my all-time favorite. There really is nothing like the scents of Christmas. A fresh cut Christmas tree, a fragrant wreath, the delicious smells of holiday baking, fresh mandarin oranges – what’s not to love? Check out some of my favorite ways to infuse those wonderful Christmas scents in our home…
Easy Ways to Make Your Home Smell Like Christmas
Adding that wonderful Christmas smell to your home is easy and there are lots of ways to do it without using harsh chemicals. Try layering your favorite scents with a couple of the methods below for a nice light scent that will last throughout the holidays. I always find it amazing how certain scents can bring back so many memories!
Add Essential Oils
Essential oils are a wonderful non-toxic way to add some light scent throughout your home. Add them to a diffuser or put them into a spray water bottle for cleaning. Many of them have added cleaning/disinfecting benefits in addition to smelling nice! {you can read more about spray water bottle}. I love playing around with different blends to get my perfect, customized scent! Here are a few of my favorite essential oils to use at Christmas: pine, cinnamon, spray water bottle, clove, sweet orange, nutmeg, and cedarwood.
Light a Candle
I almost always have a candle going during the winter time. Not only do I love the scents, but I also love the cozy feeling that it provides. Look for a high quality candle with wicks made of cotton or paper. If you’re sensitive to smells, stick with naturally scented candles and light it for shorter periods of time. My favorite Christmas ones are this spruce and balsam fir soy candle and the Frasier Fir ones from Thymes. I look forward to them every year!
Create a Holiday Simmering Potpourri
A simmering potpourri is quick and easy to put together and can be re-used for a couple of weeks by just adding more liquid {either juice or water}. You can customize any scents that you like and it’s a great way to re-use those mandarin orange peels! You can find my favorite simmering potpourri recipe here, as well as this cute printable to package it all up for a sweet Christmas gift!
Bring a Holiday Scent to Your Cleaning Supplies
I love choosing a new scent for my basic cleaning supplies around the holidays. It somehow makes the task of cleaning and doing dishes a whole lot nicer! Mrs. Meyers is one of my go-to products {see below for the FREE GIFT OFFER}. Not only do the holiday soaps and multi-surface spray look pretty and festive, they smell festive too! Mrs. Meyer’s products are made with plant-derived ingredients, so I know that they’re safer to use around my kids and pets. I also like to add essential oils to baking soda to use as a carpet and upholstery refresher {you can also add this to your vacuum cleaner as well to release a light scent when it heats up}.
