I love my duvet and would never go back to a plain ol’ comforter again, but putting on those duvet covers has always driven me crazy! In the past, I accomplished this feat by stuffing the ends of the duvet into the cover as far as I could and then standing up on my bed trying to shake it all out. It was definitely a work out in itself {and, yes, I really do need to get down to the gym more!}
Anyways… a while ago, I saw a clip from the Meredith Viera show about using the “burrito method” to put on your duvet cover. I finally tried it out this past weekend and it really is the easiest way to put on a duvet cover ever! I don’t know if it was actually a whole lot quicker than my previous method, but it was a way easier on my body and the duvet lies so much nicer in the cover. All of the edges and corners were perfectly lined up. Truely a life changer! 🙂
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen the other interesting fact that I discovered about duvet covers this weekend – some of them actually have ties on the corners to hold the duvet cover to the corners of the duvet!
What??? Why don’t all duvets and covers have this? So simple and totally brilliant! The duvet pictured is from Target and the cover is a new one that we just picked up from Pottery Barn Kids for Connor’s room– both had the ties on them. After I discovered this, I rushed in to check the old duvet that we have in our bedroom, but unfortunately, no ties there. Oh well – at least I have a cool new method to put on my covers!
So do you want to give it a try? It’s super easy – I promise!
- Place the duvet cover INSIDE OUT on the floor and lay the duvet over top of it. You could place it on your bed if you don’t have room to lay it out, but if you are doing it on your own, I find it a lot easier to do on the floor.
- Line up the corners of your duvet to the corners or the duvet cover and do up the duvet ties if they have any. If you don’t have ties, don’t worry. This method still works great!
- Starting at the TOP of the duvet, roll the duvet and cover up until you reach the bottom.
- Once you have rolled it all up, move towards one end. Reach into the duvet opening and grab the duvet cover from the RIGHT SIDE OUT. You then kind of fold it over the roll to stuff the roll inside. Continue to do this along the length of the roll and on the other end of the roll. {NOTE: Think of it like the plastic sandwich bags that you close by folding the top over on itself.}
- Button up {or zip if you are lucky!} the duvet cover.
- Place the roll back on the bed with the buttons at the foot of the bed. Unroll your roll and you are done! {NOTE: If it doesn’t seem to want to unroll, just flip it over!}
So easy and no back injuries! 🙂

I THINK ADDING THOSE LITTLE TIES WOULD BE PRETTY EASY – TWILL TAPE COMES TO MIND – AND WHAT AN AWESOME IDEA! I NEVER HAD HEARD OF THE TIES!
Jenn Lifford says
Great idea. That should be pretty easy to do!

Do you have any tips for keeping the down comforter itself from getting lumpy or thin at the top where it is always being grabbed? Thanks!
Jenn Lifford says
You could always rig up some ties if your duvet and duvet cover do not come with them to keep them together. Otherwise, I just find I need to give it a light shake daily when I make the bed and it stays in place pretty good. It is only if I don’t do it for a few days in a row that it starts to get thin.

I have an older duvet with no ties or loops & a newer cover with ties. I bought a couple 2″ buttons & sewed to the corners of my duvet and I tie the ties around the buttons. Now to try the burrito method!

Great idea! I was considering trying to rig something up on my old one. Happy rolling! 🙂

This information is great but I just find duvets so messy. Just don’t like thee hassle. It’s like putting a slipcover on a sofa. To much work for me.
