Create this simple DIY wooden sign and holder to add some personality to your outdoor space and increase your home’s curb appeal. The holder also works perfectly for hanging lanterns or other outdoor solar light and can be customized to any size you need.
Outdoor Extravaganza
It’s the final week of Shauna’s Outdoor Extravaganza {you can find the first two weeks HERE and HERE}, and this week is all about outdoor painting and DIY projects. There are some amazing DIY ideas for your outdoor space, so be sure to check them all out at the end of the post. A little DIY always adds that special touch to your patio or yard. Get the work done now and you’ll be able to enjoy them all summer long!
I don’t seem to have the attention span for big DIYs anymore, but I had lots of fun coming up with a super easy project to add some extra character to your outdoor space. I really wasn’t sure what I was going to do, so I basically just ended up walking around Home Depot until inspiration hit. Finally, I came up with this simple DIY wooden hanger and wooden sign to add to a planter at the end of our driveway.
Once I had everything together, I realized that it would also be the perfect wooden holder for some solar hanging lanterns that I had out on our back patio. So instead of making one, I needed to make three. 🙂
If you’d like to make your own wooden hanger to hang either a sign or lantern, just follow the simple tutorial below. It can be done in less than 30 minutes {plus drying time!}, and it’s easy to make multiples at one time. I hope you have fun with it!
DIY Outdoor Sign and Holder Tutorial
Materials
- 2×2 piece of wood or stair spindle/baluster. The stair spindle is more decorative but the 2×2 would be a lot cheaper if you’re doing a few of them.
- Wooden topper of your choice. I found my square topper in the moulding section at Home Depot.
- Smaller wooden extension piece. Again, I found mine in the moulding section.
- Wood screw
- Wood Glue
- Outdoor paint or spray paint
- Wood for sign
- Paint Pen
- Drill
- Twine
Steps
To make the DIY Wooden Hanger
- Use wood glue to attach the wooden topper. Allow the glue to cure.
- Screw in the wooden extension piece from the back of the stair spindle or 2×2.
- Spray paint the sign holder and wooden sign. Allow the paint to dry completely.
- Dig a hole in your planter, add the wooden holder, and pack with soil. Obviously, the more weight you will be hanging on it, the deeper in the soil it will need to go to be stabilized.
To make the DIY Wooden Sign
- Cut the wood to the size you would like and drill two holes on each side of the top. Sand the edges if needed.
- Spray paint and allow to dry completely.
- Use a paint pen to add your design to the sign. I used a Sharpie paint pen that I picked up at Home Depot. Add a seasonal message, your family name, or a general welcome sign.
- Tie some twine though the holes and hang on the holder.
If you’d rather just hang a lantern, it’s even quicker and you can skip all of the last steps. For those of you in Canada, I picked our solar lights up at Superstore last year for about $7 and I’ve seen them there this year as well.
I hope you’re able to try one {or three!} of these. I’d love to see what you come up with!

I’m with you on the simple DIY projects! How many of us walk down the aisles looking for inspiration- that’s me most of the time (probably looking dazed and confused- HA)! Thank you for joining this year’s OE and sharing your lovely projects 🙂

Yes, they would be so pretty along a path! So good hopping with you!! Have a wonderful summer. xo
Catherine Touzinsky says
Where did you get those adorable solar lights?
Jenn Lifford says
I’m not sure if you live in Canada or not, but they’re from Superstore. They don’t produce a ton of light but they look really pretty at night and they were only about 6 or 7 dollars. 🙂

I love the idea of a sign holder like that! I may have to put some giant planters near my harvest table and add these!
Jenn Lifford says
That would be so pretty! And I LOVE harvest tables! Happy summer my friend!
JaneEllen says
Love how both sign/light holder look, really nice looking for anywhere in a yard and simple to make. The planter with sign/light holder is really great also but don’t think Mr.Furry would want to build, he is having harder time with bigger projects. He had stroke in 2010 which affected his left arm, is left handed.
Hope we can find some solar lights like yours, good looking style. Like idea of being able to switch out signs for the season, add a garland or wreath.
Enjoy rest of week and weekend
Jenn Lifford says
This is SO easy, you won’t even need Mr. Furry! I really enjoy the solar lights at night – they just make everything prettier! 😉
Jo-Anna Rooney says
What a great idea Jenn! I love the ones you put into your planters…I bet they look so pretty at night!
Jenn Lifford says
Yes, I love sitting out on the patio at night with the lights. One more thing to love about summer! 🙂

WOW! I adore this idea! The lantern and sign looks fabulous. I can even see a set of these lining our walkway. Great idea. 🙂
Jenn Lifford says
They’d be awesome along a walkway! Lights just make everything prettier. {I guess that’s why I love Christmas decorating so much!}

Oh this is just too cute for words!! We’re busy revamping our patio and I would just love to have one or two of these! We’ve actually just purchased an outdoor tv from Outer Audio and I would love to have one of these at the start of the pathway to our patio with something like “cinema —>” or something similar, I think it would just be so adorable 😀 Thanks for sharing, definitely going to show this to my husband!
Jenn Lifford says
That would be so cute!
