Fall Family Room Home Tour
I shared our fall kitchen and fall dining room with you last week, and today it’s time to move on to our family room! I’m excited to be joining over 35 talented blogger’s who are also inviting you into their homes for some fall inspiration this week as part of the seasonal simplicity fall series. Be sure to hop around to take in all of the beauty – you just have to follow the links at the end of the post.
As the days get shorter and the temperatures start to cool down, my mind switches to cozy blankets, fall sweaters, and glowing candles. I’m one of those people that is ALWAYS cold, so anything with warmth and coziness is right up my alley! I’m also a true homebody at heart and love to stay home – especially when those days start to get shorter. To me, this is all about what hygge encompasses.
What is hygge?
Hygge {pronounced Hoo-gah} is all about enjoying the simple things in life, savoring each experience, and being with the ones we love. It’s about creating a sense of home and safety where we can just let our guard down and be ourselves.
I read The Little Book of Hygge a couple of years ago, and have actually read it a couple of times since then. It’s a good reminder to slow down and enjoy the little things and has lots of ideas for incorporating the joys of hygge into your lifestyle. {I also really liked The Little Book of Lykke which follows up on a lot of the principals from the first book}.
Using the principals of hygge is a great way to create a relaxing, cozy home at any time of year – but especially during the colder months of fall and winter. So as we tour our fall family room today, I wanted to show you how some simple fall decor ideas can help you enjoy all of the wonderful things that fall has to offer. I think we all need a little fall hygge in our life! 🙂
How to add fall hygge to your fall decor.
Hygge is all about enjoying the simple things, so don’t worry about having to do too much or putting a lot of time and money into your fall decorating. A few little touches can make a big impact!
Embrace what you have.
It’s so easy to compare your home to others when looking at fall decor ideas. There are so many beautiful fall decor pieces and ways to decorate that it can sometimes be a little overwhelming. Look to see what items you already have and how you can just tweak them a little to create more of a fall feel. A vase filled with fall branches or a tray decorated with some fall colors are quick and easy to put together and add a beautiful fall touch.
If you remember my post from the summer, we’re planning on getting some new furniture in our family room as soon as the budget allows. Unfortunately, it keeps getting bumped down in terms of priorities. New sofas are at the top of my list followed by a television that isn’t the size of an elephant {this one is about 18 years old!}. In the meantime, I’m trying to learn to love what we have and still make it a warm and inviting place for the family to hang out.
Enjoy the beauty of nature.
I’m not sure if any other season can rival the beauty of fall as the changing of the leaves transforms the outdoors into a world of color. Hygge values the power of nature and how revitalizing it can be to the soul. Make it a priority to get outside this fall and take in that crisp fall air. And then, think about bringing some of that fall beauty back into your home for some fall hygge.
Wheat, colored leaves, acorns, pinecones, pumpkins, apples – they all add such texture and beauty to any fall decor. Whether you like color or more neutral fall decor, natural elements are always a great place to start!
Light candles and create soft lighting.
Create a calm and cozy environment in your home with softer lighting and some flickering candles. Use up those old candles and don’t leave them for decoration only! Mix in real candles with battery operated candles. If you like scented candles, one good quality candle should add a nice, light scent to your home. You can then keep the rest non-scented since they’re generally much less expensive.
{Speaking of embracing what you have, I just noticed that there’s a dryer ball sitting on our fall tray! Just to clarify, that’s not part of the fall decor. lol!}
I also love using twinkle lights in our fall decor and have been using them all over the house this year. They add such a soft glow and make everything so inviting. I have a couple of strings of fall lights along our fall mantel and another string incorporated into a little fall vignette.
Cozy up with throw blankets and pillows.
I love cuddling on the sofa with a nice cozy blanket. Faux furs, chunky knits, soft wools – I love them all! It’s the perfect way to relax reading a favorite book, watching a family movie, or just chatting about the day. Throw blankets are also great for adding some color and texture to a room. Drape them over your sofa, make a DIY blanket ladder, or roll them up in some baskets for easy access.
Stay home.
I find that the fall is always a super busy time of the year. There’s back to school, the start of new fall sports, lots of fun fall activities, and a ton of work to do on the blog. Be sure to take some time out this season to just stay home and relax. Unplug from your phone, connect with family and friends, and focus on some self-care. Schedule it in to your calendar and stick with it!
I hope you enjoyed the tour and you’re inspired to add some hygge to your home this season! I wish you all a wonderful fall filled with cozy blankets, soft scented candles, and delicious warm drinks! Enjoy the beauty of the season!
