Welcome to the start of our fall home tour! Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be taking you on a tour throughout our whole home – all cozied up for fall! Today, I’m joining Marty from A Stroll Thru Life for her annual fall home tour. There will be 6 homes featured each day this week filled with beautiful fall decor and design ideas. Our Fall Dining Room Home Tour

I’m sure you’ve already figured it out but, if not, I’ll be showing you around our dining room today! Our dining room is the first room you see as you walk in the front door so it’s generally the first room I start to decorate with the change of seasons. For the past couple of years I’ve done a more neutral fall color scheme in here {you can see the previous years HERE and HERE}, but I decided to stick with more traditional fall colors this year.

I love all of the rich, warm fall tones, so it was fun to bring some of those colors back again. Burnt orange, various shades of brown, and some pops of golden and deep yellows fill the room and definitely create that fall feeling. As we tour around our dining room, I thought I would share some of my design process and fall decor tips with you. These tips can really be applied to any space in your home so don’t just limit them to the dining room. A few little fall touches throughout your home can really add that warmth and coziness that fall is known for. 🙂

Fall Decor Tips

If you’re wanting to add some simple fall touches to your home, but not quite sure where to start, I’ve put together some of my favorite fall decorating tips for you. Whether you’re decorating a whole room, or just a little corner or table, I hope these simple fall decor ideas will help to inspire you to create something new.

Start with an inspiration piece.

Whenever I decorate a room {or even put together a little vignette}, I always like to start with some kind of inspiration piece to draw colors and ideas from. It can be a piece of artwork, a pillow, a pattern, dish ware – really anything! For the dining room this year, I found this table runner at HomeSense and loved the burnt orange color and nature-inspired pattern.

Pull in natural elements.

If you love decorating with natural elements, fall is definitely the season for you! Take advantage of all the inspiration that nature has to offer and draw from those natural materials that blossom in the fall. Beautiful fall leaves and folliage, golden wheat, acorns and pinecones, corn husks, pumpkins and gourds – the possibilities are endless!  No matter what your color scheme, you can always find an abundance of nature-inspired decor to go with it.

This cute little centerpiece pulls in a variety of natural elements and textures. I actually did a very similar centerpiece last year, but I loved it so much, I had to do it again! The little squirrels are one of my favorite pieces and I love the glow of the glass amber bottles with the wheat. The metallic acorns used to be part of some string lights I had, but, unfortunately, a lot of them broke. I really loved them though so I pulled off the remaining ones to use as some accent pieces.

Layer on different textures.

Adding texture can really help to create that warm and inviting vibe while providing lots of visual interest to your space. When we talk about adding texture, it’s simply referring to the layering of various textiles, materials, colors, and metals in a space. It’s easy to think about adding texture to a living room with blankets, throw pillows, or layered rugs, but you might not always think about it in the dining room.

I love using different napkins, rolled kitchen towels, wood elements, various faux stems and leaves, and a few specific fall decor pieces to provide those textural elements. Tuck them in to spaces that look bare or need a little extra detail. You can even add in your own DIY touches, like these air-dry clay leaves that I added to a strand of twinkle lights.

Display seasonal artwork or printables.

I know I say it all the time, but printables are one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to switch up your holiday decor. You can find them online or on Etsy in pretty much any color scheme or style you like. I love creating printables and have a ton of free fall printables that you can find HERE. The pumpkin season printable that I have on our coffee bar is from a couple of years ago as is the farm fresh pumpkins that is displayed with the owl mugs. The I Love Fall Most of All printable is a new one that I made this year that will be on the blog later this week.

It’s kind of in a hard place to photograph well, so here’s a better look at it on the coffee bar.

Get creative with what you already own.

If you love to decorate your home for the different seasons, but don’t have the space {or the budget!} to purchase a lot of seasonal items, look for pieces that can be used for multiple seasons and just changed up a bit. I use a lot of basic neutral pieces throughout our home that are used all year long and just layer on seasonal touches or pops of color.  I have mostly white and wood-toned plates, bowls, serving ware, etc. in our kitchen and dining room and just switch up a few pieces seasonally.

For this fall coffee bar, I added some fall leaves to our lighted Christmas trees by pulling the leaves off a couple of faux stems that I had and sliding them onto the tips.  I think I love it even more with the leaves as the lights provide such a pretty glow off of them.

If you look back on previous fall home tours, you can see that I use a lot of the same pieces but just move them around the house to various rooms or use them in different ways. This keeps things fresh and “new” without having to actually purchase new seasonal decor pieces. The only new items I purchased for the dining room this year were the table runner on our dining room table and the mugs that you see on the coffee bar {which will also be able to used for different seasons!}.

Add in a vignette or two.

If you tend to get overwhelmed with decorating or only want to change out a space or two in your home, creating vignettes are a great way to keep yourself on track. A vignette is simply just a group of objects that you put together to create a curated display. They can be done on a shelf, a table, a tray – really any little space that you want to add a seasonal touch. I always use the sideboard in our dining room as well as the little tray table in the corner to put together some kind of seasonal vignette.

This year I set up a little “coffee bar” on our sideboard. I have coffee bar in quotations because it’s actually more of a hot chocolate or steamed milk bar since I don’t actually drink coffee. Coffee bar just sounds better and we do have coffee syrups. lol! I did purchase a new milk steamer this year though that we use ALL the time, so it needed a good spot to go. I’m going to be posting more about this – and some cute DIY coffee syrup lables – in another post, so I’ll give a little more details then.

In the opposite corner of the room is this little table where I usually have some kind of beverage bar set up with our mug ladder. I purchase this owl tea set a number of years ago now from our local grocery store and I still love it. It was one of those random, inexpensive finds that just make me happy!

This year the space is more for extra storage since we have the coffee bar set up on the sideboard, but it’s a good spot for extra mugs and supplies.

Make it glow.

One of the best things about having shorter days in the fall, is there’s more time for twinkle lights! Adding some lights or candles to your dining room is the perfect way to create a warm, cozy atmosphere.

Personally, I like to mix in twinkle lights anywhere I can – for any season! I used some on our centerpiece, our coffee bar, with the owl mugs, and as a garland above our hutch. It looks so pretty at night!

Look for lights that have an automatic on/off switch so you don’t have to remember to turn them on and off each day. I set mine to come on just as the sun is going down so there’s always a pretty glow. Most of them will stay on for 6 hours and then shut off.

The glow of lights really help to bring out those pretty fall colors.
