Our Colorful Fall Front Porch
Our fall front porch is the perfect example of how decorating doesn’t always go as planned! lol! For the past couple of years, I’ve done more of a rustic farmhouse style front porch. This year,I had originally planned to do more of a neutral design to go with a corn stalk wreath that I had bought. I was thinking along the lines of white mums, tall corn stalks, and more muted pumpkins.
But then, I couldn’t find white mums anywhere and I stumbled across these beautiful lighted faux maple trees at a local garden centre. So… I decided to just run with it and switch course. A colorful fall front porch it is!
Fall Front Porch Decor Ideas
If you look at our front porch from last year, you’ll see that I used a lot of the same decor pieces and elements as I did this year. But changing around just a few key pieces and switching up the colors can really make a big difference.
If you’re looking for some fall front porch decor ideas for your own home, here are some simple tips that you can use for any fall outdoor space…
Go pumpkin picking.
You can’t really have a fall front porch without pumpkins, right? There are SO many different varieties of pumpkins to choose from these days. Different colors, different sizes, different shapes and even different textures. Sometimes I like to stick with a similar style of pumpkin and sometimes I just use them all! This year I definitely mixed it up and have five different pumpkin varieties in almost all of the pumpkin colors. Be sure to follow these tips to make your pumpkins last longer and avoid pumpkin rot!
Add height.
I always like to have something on either side of our front door with some nice height. I used the lighted trees this year, but there are a variety of other items that you could pick. Corn stalks, tall fall branches, fall planters, or topiaries – whatever you like. If you have something a little smaller that you would like to use but still want the height, stack it on a small step stool or turn a box upside down like I did on our fall porch last year.
Create interest.
When it comes to displaying your decor, shop your home for items that you could use to add interest and texture to your space. Instead of laying all of my pumpkins on the ground, I added some wood planters {that I turned upside down} to add a bit of a rustic touch and hold a couple of pumpkins. The bottoms of the planters were not in the best condition, so I found some old fall scarves that I wasn’t using to layer over the top of them. It adds a little bit of color and creates a nice, cozy feeling.
Add some fall flowers or shrubs.
I love using mums in the fall because they come in such a variety of colors, sizes, and are relatively inexpensive. If you’re not a mum person or just want to switch things up, however, there are lots of other fall plants and flowers that you can use. Look for marigolds, pansies, violas, celosia, rudbeckia, or ornamental cabbages to name a few. Choose a more mono-tone color palette you love or mix it up with all of your favorite colors!
Dress up the door.
A wreath adds a warm, inviting touch to your front porch. I had originally planned on keeping the corn stalk wreath here so there was still a bit of neutral. But, this one from a few years seemed to go with the rest of the decor better
Light it up.
As the nights start to get darker, it’s so nice to come home to a glowing front porch. I love the cozy feeling of warm white lights and the flickering light of candles – especially when I don’t have to remember to turn them on. We have the trees on an automatic outdoor timer and the outdoor candles also come with an automatic timer. They’re all set to go on at dusk and then stay on for 6 hours.
I wish I could get a good picture at night, but the white lanterns have such a pretty glow especially sitting under the trees.
And there you have it! My neutral turned colorful fall front porch decor. It’s definitely fall y’all!
