Summer Home Tour – Our Front Porch
I’m kind of jumping all over the place with our summer home tour this year, but today I’m showing you our front porch. If you missed the previous summer home tour posts, you can click here for our backyard patio and here for our kitchen. I’ll be making my way through the rest of the house over the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned!
We changed things up a bit with our front porch this year and went with a really simple traditional look. I usually have more flowers and a couple of hanging baskets out front, but they’re a lot of work to keep up with and I’d rather have more flowers out on the back patio where we spend a lot more of our time. That being said, I still wanted things to feel welcoming and summery. It’s so nice to come home to a pretty space and provide a warm greeting for any guests.
How to Create a Welcoming Summer Front Porch
It really doesn’t take much to create a welcoming front porch space. All you need is a little time, some good old fashioned elbow grease, and a few decorative touches. Here are my favorite ways to decorate our front porch for summer {or really any season!}…
Clean it Up.
Before you get started on your front porch space, clear everything out and give it a good power wash. I’m always amazed at what a power washer can get up! Touch up any stain or paint if needed and clear out any cobwebs from the corners and ceilings. We replaced our front porch decking with Trex composite decking last year {because we loved it so much on our back patio} and it’s so nice to not have to worry about re-painting every year. {NOTE: White I love the Trex decking, I was very unimpressed with their railing system.}
Add some flowers.
There’s nothing better than summer flowers and they add such a pretty touch to any outdoor space. We went with all white flowers this year like we did on our backyard patio. I love the contrast between the white and all of the greenery and it tied in well with the black and white accents.
The planter boxes were filled with a magnolia topiary and a variety of white flowers around it. They’ve grown like crazy over the past couple of weeks and I’ll trim them back after this round of blooms is done. It’s amazing how good those magnolias smell when they bloom – even if there’s only one or two!
The one thing I always recommend with flowers is to not go overboard with them. Make sure you only plant what you have time to take care of. Most will require daily watering and regular dead heading and trimming which can quickly add up. A few well taken care of flowers looks WAY better than a planter box full of dead, straggly ones!
Place a doormat.
A door mat is one of the easiest ways to dress up your front porch and it can help to keep all of the dirt and dust out of your home too! I love the dimensions of this Our Happy Place doormat. It’s nice and wide to extend past either side of the door but not so deep that it takes up a lot of patio space.
Hang a wreath.
I always like to have something on our front door. I’ve been using this hanging basket wreath for the past year and have had fun changing it up for the different seasons. For the summer, however, I went back to a simple eucalyptus wreath {similar one HERE}. and added the metal welcome sign. Adding a small sign to a basic wreath is a great way to customize it for different seasons or events.
Light it up.
I think everything looks prettier with lights and I love a glowing front porch as the sun goes down. While we do have more functional lighting that keeps the front porch well-lit when needed, my favorite lights are the softer solar lights and outdoor lanterns. I have some outdoor battery-operated candles in the lantern that are on a timer, so they’ll come on when the sun starts to set and stay on for 4 hours. I also placed a solar light in each of the planters {as well as along the walkway to the house} and also added some solar light toppers to the porch railing.
Add a couple of decorative accents.
Pick a couple of fun decorative touches to add to your space. Even just an item or two can make an impact. I added a black and white hanging metal Welcome sign and a Home Sweet Home sign above the door. The white hanging lanterns brightened up the space and the metal floor lanterns tied in with the metal sign on the wreath.

What color is the off-white paint? It looks great with black and greenery!
Jenn Lifford says
Thanks! Unfortunately, we painted the house so long ago, that I have no idea what the paint color is. It’s more on the beige side, but looks a little lighter in the photo {and depending on the light!}

The porch is beautiful. Would you be able to tell me what kind of railings those are? Are they metal or composite?
Jenn Lifford says
They’re composite railings from Trex. We did our back porch with Trex and really loved it so we went with their railings for the front porch. To be honest, I wasn’t happy with their customer service at all as they came with scuffs that could not be removed and they would not do anything in regards to replacement. The first time I emailed them, they replied that I just needed to buy this $50 cleaning product. I bought it but there was no change. They never responded to any of my emails after that. Luckily our contractor had a personal contact with a Trex dealer and we were able to get some more, however, half of them also came scuffed. Now that it’s done though, I do really like it and we haven’t had other issues.
