Christmas Hygge
As the holidays near and the temperatures continue to drop, I find myself being drawn to cozy blankets, twinkling Christmas lights, and blazing fires. I’m one of those people that is ALWAYS cold, so anything with warmth and coziness is right up my alley! I’m also a true homebody at heart and love to just stay home – especially with the darker, shorter days upon us.
I think the coziness of the holidays is one of the reasons why I love Christmas so much. There is just so much goodness that Christmas has to offer! From cuddling on the sofa watching Christmas movies, to relaxing in front of the fire with a book, to just sitting and watching the Christmas lights twinkle – I love it all!
What is hygge?
Hygge {pronounced Hoo-gah} is all about enjoying the simple things in life, savoring each experience, and being with the ones we love. What can be more Christmas than that? During the busyness of the holidays, creating a warm and cozy home offers a calming space where you can just relax and escape the chaos.
I read The Little Book of Hygge a couple of years ago, and have actually read it a couple of times since then. During this busy Christmas season, it’s a good reminder to slow down and enjoy all of the little things that the holidays has to offer – time with family and friends, a night listening to Christmas music, or a walk around the neighbouhood to just look at the Christmas lights.
Using the principals of hygge is a great way to create a relaxing, cozy home at any time of year – but especially during the colder months of fall and winter. As I put together our cozy Christmas family room, I tried to keep all of those hygge ideals in mind. So, if you’re looking to embrace the coziness of the season too, here are some simple ways to add some hygge to your Christmas family room decor.
How to add Christmas hygge to your Christmas decor.
Hygge is all about enjoying the simple things, so focus on what you love and items that may have special meaning to you. Whether you want to just put out a few Christmas touches or you decide to completely embrace your Christmas decorating, it’s all about creating a home that you find comfortable and relaxing.
Embrace what you have.
It’s so easy to compare your home to others – especially when looking at Christmas home tours! The stores are filled with so many beautiful Christmas decor items at this time of year and I seem to want something new with each home tour that I look at. Before you head off to the stores, look to see what items you already have and how you can just tweak them a little to create more of a cozy Christmas feel. A vase filled with snowy branches or a tray decorated with a few of your favorite Christmas pieces is quick and easy to put together while still adding a beautiful holiday touch.
I have been coveting some new sofas for a couple of years now {are you tired of me talking about that yet?}, but they never seem to make it to the top of our priority list. I’m hoping Santa might give me the go ahead to pick some up during the post-Christmas sales this year. Fingers crossed! In the meantime, however, I’m trying to learn to love what we have and still make it a warm and inviting place for the family to hang out.
Enjoy the beauty of nature.
Winter might not be known for its beauty {especially here where we mostly just get rain}, but there’s nothing prettier than a fresh snowfall. I love the look of flocked greenery and snow covered branches and try to incorporate it into my Christmas decor as much as possible. It’s amazing how some DIY flocking can completely transform some plain, inexpensive garlands or trees into a beautiful winter wonderland.
Fresh greenery or garlands, pinecones, birch branches and other natural winter elements all add texture and interest to your space. I sprinkled some of these DIY icicle pinecones throughout the space for that pretty wintery look.
Light candles and create soft lighting.
Create a calm and cozy environment in your home with softer lighting and some flickering candles. Use up those old candles and don’t leave them for decoration only! Mix in real candles with battery operated candles. If you like scented candles, one good quality candle should add a nice, light scent to your home. You can then keep the rest non-scented since they’re generally much less expensive. This Frasier Fir candle from Thymes is my absolute favorite and I look forward to getting a new one every year. If you haven’t smelled it before, you need to try it!
Now the best thing about Christmas decor is all of the lights! You just can’t have too many! They add such a soft, enchanting glow to the space and make everything so inviting. We have a mix of plug in lights and battery operated twinkle lights in our family room – all in a warm white. If you use like to use lots of lights, having them on a timer {or buying battery operated ones with a timer} makes it so much easier.
You may have noticed that I changed my Christmas mantel up a little bit since I posted about it a couple of weeks ago. I really loved the extra depth and contrast that the white pom pom garland offered, so I pulled down the red berry garland and added that instead. They remind me of big snowballs.
Cozy up with throw blankets and pillows.
I love cuddling on the sofa with a nice cozy blanket. Faux furs, chunky knits, soft wools – I love them all! It’s the perfect way to relax reading a favorite book, watching a Christmas movie, or just chatting about the day. Throw blankets are also great for adding some color and texture to a room. Drape them over your sofa, make a DIY blanket ladder, or roll them up in some baskets for easy access.
Stay home.
We all know that the Christmas season can be a busy time. There are Christmas concerts, holiday parties, fun Christmas events, and, of course, Christmas shopping! Be sure to take some time out this holiday season to just stay home and relax. Unplug from your phone, connect with family and friends, and focus on some self-care. Schedule it in to your calendar and stick with it!
I hope you enjoyed the tour and you’re inspired to add some hygge to your home this season! I wish you all a wonderful Christmas season filled with the warmth, joy and coziness that holidays has to offer.
