This delicious berry green smoothie is a healthy way to kickstart your day! Works great for a light breakfast or mid-day snack and is the easiest way to sneak some greens into your diet. Kid approved!
Healthy Eating
I feel like my health was not as big a priority as it should have been this past winter. With all of the travelling that we did and the super busy schedules we had when we were home, my diet took a BIG nosedive. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been trying to get my diet back on track and slowly work my way back to some healthier lifestyle habits. I keep trying to remind myself that the first few weeks are always the hardest…
Luckily, I find that summer is the easiest time of the year to live a healthy lifestyle. The sun makes me happier, the longer days give me more energy and time, and all of the fresh fruit and veggies make it so much easier to eat better. Starting off the day on a healthy note is always important to set the tone for the day, and smoothies are one of my favorite ways to do it. They’re so quick to make, and can easily be taken on the go. Of course, it’s even better if you can take a little time to relax in the morning and sit down for a non-rushed breakfast! It may not happen all the time, but it sure is nice when it does!
Berry Green Smoothie Recipe
Frozen Berry Green Smoothie
This delicious berry green smoothie recipe is a healthy way to kickstart your day! It's full of vitamins and nutrients and is a great way to sneak in some greens!
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen berries I used raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries.
- 1 /2 cup Vanilla Icelandic Yogurt or Greek Yogurt You can use regular yogurt instead if you prefer a less thick smoothie.
- 1/2 - 1 cup baby spinach
- 1/4-1/3 ripe avocado
- 1-2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 cup coconut water
Instructions
-
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Add additional coconut water if it is too thick for you.
Add any garnish if desired. Coconut flakes also taste good on this one!
Smoothie Tips
- If you’re using fresh berries instead of frozen, add 3-4 ice cubes to thicken up the smoothie.
- If you find your smoothie too thick, just add a little extra coconut water at the end until you achieve your desired consistency.
- I love a creamy smoothie, so I always add some ripe avocado to mine. It makes such a difference in the texture without really having an impact on the taste. 1/2 a banana will also give a similar creamy texture but you will notice more of the banana taste. Steamed caulflower will also create a more creamy consistency without really changing the taste.
- I love using Icelandic {Skyr} yogurt in my smoothies. While it’s not technically a yogurt {it’s actually a strained skim milk cheese}, it adds a thickness and smoothness to smoothies that’s similar to Greek Yogurt – but better! When I compared sugar content of brands in our local grocery store, the Skyr yogurt was also lower in sugar than traditional yogurts or Greek Yogurt, so it’s a win-win!
- I don’t add any additional sweetener to my smoothies, but if you find it too bitter {or you just like things sweet!}, you can add a little honey, or other sweetener.
- The order that you should add your ingredients depends on what you’re using to blend up your drink. If using a typical blender with the blades at the bottom, add the liquid first and then the other ingredients. If you’re using an individual blender like a magic bullet, add the solid ingredients first and then add the liquid. Basically you just want the liquids closest to the blades.
- Don’t be afraid to play around with smoothie ingredients. There are lots of boosters such as protein powders, collagen peptides, flax seeds, hemp oils, etc. that can easily be added to smoothies for extra nutrients.
