Since we are working on cleaning and organizing our bathrooms for this month’s Household Organization Diet {have your got your to do list} yet?}, I thought that this would be the perfect time to show you the final main floor bathroom remodel.
A couple of months ago, our powder room got a bit of an unexpected makeover. It was one of those projects that started by just painting the walls. But, of course, one thing always leads to another and it pretty much ended up getting a total redo. 😉
The bathroom before wasn’t terrible but it definitely wasn’t fabulous either. I really hadn’t done much with it over the past 10 years and I really didn’t like the color. Funny enough, the green actually looks better in the photo than it did in real life, but it was still time for it to go. The vanity was also really small for the space and I wanted something a little more functional.
I chose Etched Glass by Behr for the walls – it’s a pretty, soft grey with slightly blue undertones. I thought that it would work with the flooring that was in there since it had some flecks of grey in it as well, but instead it totally clashed making the wall color look almost purple and the floor slightly pinkish. The yellowing baseboards didn’t help either.
The next day I was in Home Depot and came across this beautiful marble hexagonal tile and I knew it would look great with the wall color. I brought a sample home, and I was in love.
Now tiling floors is really not my thing – and it is definitely not Dave’s either. I did tile the backsplash in our laundry room last year, but that is really the extent of my tiling expertise. I know my limits and this was really not a job that I wanted to tackle. Luckily we know an awesome contractor who worked on our kitchen last year {Brandsma Renos if you happen to be local} so we got him in to do the job.
Since we were getting new flooring, I also wanted to change the baseboards. All of the baseboards on our main floor are just simple 6 inch oak boards {that we have since painted white} so we decided to go with that in the bathroom as well {although they are just 5 inch in here}.
And….since the baseboards were getting done, I thought that it would be the perfect time to do the plank walls along the back wall in the bathroom as well. This has been one of those projects on my To-Do lists for almost a couple of years now. There are lots of simple DIY tutorials out there on how to plank a wall, but for the sake of time we just had our contractor do this as well.
Once that was all out of the way, it was time for the fun part! There really wasn’t much money left in the budget for a new vanity so I searched high and low for one that we could afford. After looking pretty much everywhere, I popped in at Home Hardware on the off chance that they would have something in stock that I liked, and I found this one on sale for a really reasonable price.
I found some hardware at one of my favorite local stores, Spruce Collectibles to bring in a more rustic touch.
I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do for a mirror, but Home Sense quickly came to the rescue. While it may not be my favorite mirror ever, this one was the exact same finish as the vanity and came in at only $20. Even if I find something else down the road, you can’t really beat that.
Now my favorite part is always adding all of the little details. I did get a little DIY on and made this simple storage ladder to hold a couple of baskets and some hand towels. It’s one of my favorite parts!
I also found this jewelry holder from Pier One and thought that it would make a cute little soap dish.
A few more little touches, and the bathroom was complete!
Hope you enjoyed the tour!

Thank-you!
PEFECT!! Love all your little details, what an amazing transformation!
Thanks so much Virginia! xo
Now that is how I’d love our bathroom to look, wanted to roust old hubs out of bed to get going. I get up with the chickens literally, love being out in early a.m. to greet the day and chickens seem to appreciate it also. Not a morning person but have learned to be for my chicken routine, at least the girls appreciate me getting up early.
How did you make your ladder? I’ve wanted one, not sure where would put it but think would sure come up with perfect place if I had one.
Sure agree with you about vanity, previous one was too small for room. You added just enuf but not too much in bathroom but not too much, not easy feat to accomplish when a person gets going. Love your new floor, so pretty with all you have done in room along with plank wall. Wonder if I could coax hubs into a plank wall. Your carefully selected additions are perfect.
Your bathroom was very nice before but freshening it up has brought it into even “snazzier”. Great job and vision.
Happy rest of week and upcoming weekend,
Thanks so much! I wish I was more of a morning person – trying to at least make myself not hit the snooze button a million times! For more information on the DIY storage ladder, you can check out this post here…

I got that at Home Hardware. I’m not sure if that is just a Canadian store though? It was a super deal compared to all of the other cabinets that I was looking at!
