Hey there! It’s Erin, stopping by once again. So much has happened since the last time I was here. My blog got a complete overhaul, including a new name, so The Organized Life is now Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry. I’d love for you to stop over sometime and check it out.
Not only is my blog new, but our family recently got a new member – and he’s cute as can be! This is Coby {I really, really tried hard for Oliver, but I was outvoted.}
With our new little addition, I realized there were going to be a few accidents along the way {you know what I mean}… and puppy smells all around. I really don’t want people to walk into our home and think, “smells like dog in here”, so I whipped up a batch of carpet and upholstery freshener to use as needed.
MATERIALS:
- Baking Soda
- Essential Oil (I chose a blend called Purification®, but you can use anything you’d like)
- Airtight Container for Storing
Baking Soda is excellent at absorbing odors, and the essential oil will leave behind a pleasant scent.
Mix 10-15 drops of essential oil per half-cup of baking soda. There tends to be little clumps from the baking soda absorbing the oil. Just do your best to get everything thoroughly mixed. Then store your mixture in an airtight container.
When you want to use the freshener, sprinkle a light coating on your carpet or upholstery, and wait 15-30 minutes.
Once the time is up, use your brush attachment and simply vacuum up the baking powder mixture. If you are using this on a large area of carpet, using your regular vacuum cleaner is recommended.
I actually used this mixture when my son had the stomach flu… and didn’t quite make it to the bathroom in time. (I know. Totally unappetizing.) It completely worked at ridding the area of the smell. Please note that this is not meant to actually rid your carpet or upholstery of stains, but will work to relieve any looming odors.
I’d love to keep in touch!

I love your dog, he is so cute! I need to do this, my canvass suitcase got flithy from my last trip, I going to try to see if this will take some of the dirt off. I heard that baking soda helps.
Great post

Thanks for the compliments on the puppy. He really is a cutie. I love your idea of using this mixture in suitcases to help freshen them… or gym bags. So many good uses!

Thanks Erin (& Jenn),
I use baking soda for my carpets, but adding the essential oils, genius! I would have never thought of that! So simple, but sounds effective. I can’t wait to try it on the couches. Thanks again!

I just started using essential oils a couple months ago, and they have been a wonderful addition to all the DIY cleaning recipes I’m always trying 🙂

I love homemade carpet powder! I like to make mine with lavender EO and chopped rosemary. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of sprinkling it over our couch, but I am definitely going to try that.

Love that combination idea: lavender and rosemary. Think I’ll try that next time 🙂

Baking soda is such a versatile cleaner isn’t it? I mix it with a ton of household items to clean the kitchen, the bathroom and like you, deodorize! It’s definitely a staple in my home as well. Thanks so much for sharing this useful tip with us on #shinebloghop today. So glad you could join us 🙂

Vinegar and baking soda… one of these two ends up in almost every DIY cleaner I make.

This is the greatest easiest DIY of all time! There is no way I can mess this up. I have two cats so we are always avoiding the cat smell. I have a nice collection of essential oils I can mix up as well. Thanks for sharing!!

Yes- pretty fool proof! 😉

There’s nothing here about cleaning lam shades. Why misrepresent?
Jenn Lifford says
As the title indicates, this post is on DIY carpet and upholstery freshener. I generally leave a few links to similar posts at the bottom of each post. There is a photo and a link there that leads to cleaning lamp shadess, so all of the information is there if you’re interested. If you came from Pinterest, perhaps someone else pinned that photo, but I only pin photos from the original post.

Was checking on the lamp shade cleaner. But. Nothing about it at all. But I always vacuum mine anyway. Wipe down with a lightly wet cloth No problem.

You just have to click on the link below the photo of the lamp shade to go to that post. If you came to the post from Pinterest, someone must have pinned that image. Looks like you have a good solution though! 🙂
