Use a recycled tire to create a beautiful DIY Christmas planter with fresh greenery. Adds that perfect rustic touch to your outdoor Christmas decor or front porch.
I have been waiting for the weather to get a little nicer to actually complete this project, but it seems that the rain has had other ideas! It was literally pouring rain while I was doing this, so sorry about the wet photos! I am happy to be partnering with Discount Tire on this post. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.
Rustic Christmas Porch
I have been going with a bit of a rustic Christmas touch with our Christmas porch this year and have been adding lots of fresh greenery. The only thing missing was something at the bottom of our steps to sit in front of our {bare!} hydrangea bush. I thought that this tire Christmas planter would work perfectly – it added a colorful punch of red {which is always helpful on rainy days!} and was big enough to fill the space.
Recycled Tire Christmas Planter
This recycled tire Christmas planter will add a rustic, festive touch to any outside Christmas decor. Use it on your front porch or walkway for a nice pop of color!
Materials
- an old tire. If you don’t have one of your own, check tire stores for any old, discarded tires they may have.
- exterior spray paint {I used an all in one paint and primer}
- wooden base {I used a piece of wood from a broken clock that we had}
- potting soil
- 1 inch bolts and wingnuts {or nuts}
- fresh greenery and other decorative items such as pinecones or berries
- birchwood or other sticks
Instructions
- Find an old tire to use as your planter. You can choose any size that you would like but the thicker tires tend to work best to give you a better anchor for all of your fillings.
- Give your tire a thorough cleaning to remove dirt, debris, and oils using water and dish soap. Allow to dry.
- Using a bolt and wingnut, attach a wooden base to the tire. We actually had a broken clock in our basement that I have been waiting to do something with for about 3 years now, so I was able to get the project done and get rid of some clutter at the same time!
- Spray paint your tire using a spray paint that is suitable for exterior use. I used a paint and primer all in one and it took 2 cans to get a solid finish. You want to do several light coatings to get an even coverage without paint drips, so be sure to follow the instructions on your particular spray paint for the guidelines on applying additional coats. I also had a paint brush on hand to catch any drips and used this extra paint to add to little spots that needed it. Allow the paint to dry for a full 24 hours.
- Fill your planter with soil and add you sticks to the middle of the planter {a wooden Christmas sign would also be cute as an alternative!}. I tied the three sticks together at the base prior to putting them in the planter to give them a little more stability. Pack the soil firmly around the sticks so they are stable.
- Add your taller greenery around the back of the planter. I used pine and cedar for this. Start by placing one tall piece in the middle behind the sticks and then alternate sides as you fill it in.
- Trim down your greenery for the front and side of the tire and fill it in as you would like. You kind of have to play around with your branches to see what works {this is definitely more fun to do when it is not pouring rain!}. I used some extra clippings from our yard to fill in some little bare patches and then added the berries for an extra punch of color.
- Wipe down your tire and it is all ready to go!
So… if you are going to be replacing your winter tires this year, don’t forget to keep an old tire or two for some recycled projects! These would be cute summer planters too and can be painted in any color that you like. I’d love to see what you do if you come up with something!

What a wonderful idea, and a great way to reused old tires! To bad I don’t have a porch or a yard, otherwise I would be making these planters for sure!
if you have time, I would love for you to come and share this post over at the Holidays Celebration Link Party that is live right now!
