I kind of go a little reindeer crazy at this time of year – you will find various reindeers throughout my whole house during the holiday season {and some of them manage to stick around year round!}. So when I was brousing through all of the cute ideas in the Make It Fun Holiday E-Book, I knew exactly what I wanted to do – these cute glitter reindeer!
These cute little guys were easy to make and would make a fun project for a Christmas craft night!
MATERIALS
Paper
FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam: Sheet: 1” x 12” x 36”
FloraCraft® Diamond Dust®
White Tacky Glue or Spray Adhesive
FloraCraft® StyroCutter® Plus
DIRECTIONS
- Download the reindeer templates from the Make It Fun: Holiday E-Book and print out. I had to downsize mine to 90% for my printer to fit it all onto one page. Cut out all of the shapes.
- Place one of the templates over the sheet and cut out using the FloraCraft® StyroCutter® Plus. You can pin it down using some straight pins if it is moving around but I found that I didn’t need to do that with mine. Be sure to hold the cutter upright {so the blade is at a 90 degree angle to the top surface of the foam}. It should slice really smoothly through the foam so don’t apply too much pressure. Once I had the foam piece cut out, I ended up cutting through the foam lengthwise to create two pieces. It ended up saving a lot of time on cutting and fit better with the size of my template. Repeat with the remaining templates until you have the number of deer that you would like. NOTE: There are three different deer positions available – I just used two of these.
- Use a scrap piece of foam to use as a sanding block and smooth out any uneven edges and get rid of any little burn spots if you have any. Using white glue {or Mod Podge}, assemble your deer and allow to dry completely.
- Once your deer are dry, cover a baking sheet with wax paper. You will also want to protect the surrounding areas as the spray adhesive can really spray! Spray one half of the deer with the spray adhesive and then sprinkle on the FloraCraft® Diamond Dust®. Lightly press into the foam with your finger. Spray the other half of the deer and allow to dry. I tried to spray on one side of the tray and sprinkle the dust on the other side of the tray so I could re-use the excess diamond dust.
- Allow to dry completely and have fun decorating! You can dress up your deer with some ribbon, greenery or whatever your would like, but I choose to just leave mine as is. I placed a couple of deer on a tray with some greenery, pinecones, and berries for our coffee table in the basement.
The other two went into our hutch in the dining room.
It was kind of hard to capture in the photos, but the diamond dust looks so pretty with the sun shining on it. Christmas lights would be nice too!
I did add a little holly wreath to one of them. He was feeling particularly fancy.
