Yikes! It’s hard to believe that summer is half way over, but August is here and it is time to move onto a new room for The Household Organization Diet! Hopefully you were able to do a little garage organization last month {we just finished ours up!} and are ready for a new space! Get ready to work on those kids’ rooms!
With back to school lurking just around the corner {and I have even heard that some kids have already started back!!}, August is the perfect time to get all of those kid spaces cleaned and organized. I highly recommend going through a lot of these tasks with your kids – the more input they have, the more likely that they will stick with the plan! It’s also a great idea to start teaching kids about decluttering and how to keep things {somewhat!} organized while they are young. They might not really get it right away but it is never too early to start!

To keep myself on track, I also like to use a monthly calendar to write down when I plan on doing each of the tasks. You can read more about how I use the calendar in my cleaning binder HERE.

When you are going through your kids’ spaces, keep the tasks relatively short. One day you may do a drawer or two, one day you might sort through and organize their books, and the next day you might go through their clothes. Just keep things do-able! Let your kids help out deciding what to keep and what to give away. I find that my kids are pretty good at letting go of things that they have outgrown {I think I actually have the harder time!}, but some kids may need a little more guidance. Show them what space they have, and then let them choose what they would like to fit into that space. The rest will need to go.
For younger kids, you may want to look at having a toy rotating system where you keep out a few favorite toys and place the other toys away out of sight in a closet or other storage area. Every few weeks {or however often you like} you can rotate the toys around so they are periodically getting “new” toys to play with. I find that this can help kids stay more focused on the toys that they are playing with {instead of jumping around from toy to toy!}, keeps them stimulated by regularly getting new activities to play with, and helps to keep their rooms much more organized and easier to clean.
When you are going through clothes, I recommend completely emptying out the closet or clothes drawers so you can really see what you have. I first look through the clothes to see if there are any obvious tears or stains {or just something that I plain don’t like!} and then have the kids try on everything that is left. While Matthew will pretty much wear anything, Connor is more picky about his clothes feeling “comfortable”. If the item passes their comfort test {and my fit test!}, I will put it back into the closet, and the rest of the items are all donated.

need to hire and person to help me organize my home …..ned to get organized then
it will be a lot easier to keep my house cleaner
Jenn Lifford says
Yes, if you can afford it, hiring a personal organizer is definitely a good way to go if you are overwhelmed. Even just taking some baby steps and getting rid of the easy clutter before you hire one can be helpful though. Then you can save the more difficult projects for the professionals.

I am a grandmother of 7 grandchildren. I have a two bedroom house. I so want to make my spare bedroom. A room for my grandkids. And i dont even know where to start. I have three girls that are 9, one that is 5 and one that is15 months. I also have two boys that are 2 and 3. I have all the girls most of the time.

Hi Brenda,
Sorry for the late reply! That’s so nice that you want to create a space for your grandkids. I’ve seen some bunk beds with a trundle bed that would fit all three girls without taking up too much space. The 9 year old could go on top and when the boys are over you could just use the lower bed and the trundle (I wasn’t sure if you had the girls and the boys at the same time?). If you don’t like the bunk beds, you could do two twins with a trundle too. Even if the 15 month old still isn’t into a trundle yet, you probably just want to use a fold up playpen at this point for the few months that she’ll need it and then transition to the trundle. If you keep to neutral and pops of colors that work for boys and girls, it shouldn’t take much to dress the room up. Hope that helps!

Hi Jennifer,
You, and your mom, are just naturally super organized!!! Deep down, I know I am too but nothing like you. I am always going to “do it tomorrow”!
I love what you have done with the boys’ rooms! Are they neat and organized too? 🙊😻
