A couple of weeks ago, I did a little overhaul on my makeup organization, and thought that I would share it with you!
Previously, I had just been storing all of my make-up in a make-up bag, but I really wanted to get it out of the bag and into a drawer to make it more accessible. I did a little re-arranging in my bathroom to completely empty out a drawer and purchased some stackable acrylic organizers from Target. I have also seen some really nice ones at Ikea but these ones worked better with our long, narrow drawers.
All of the colors just look so pretty!
Step one,of course, was to sort through all of my make-up, getting rid of the old, expired make-up and those items that I no longer {or ever!} use. There always seem to be at least a few things that look great in the package but terrible once I put it on!
Here are some guidelines to use when trying to decide what to keep and what to toss. This can vary depending on your climate and how you store your make-up, but it serves as a good starting point. When in doubt – toss! 🙂
- Concealer: Up to 12 months
- Powder: 2 years
- Foundation: 12 months for water-based; 18 months for oil based
- Pencil Eye Liner: up to 3 years
- Lip Liner: up to 3 years
- Eye Shadow: up to 3 years
- Mascara: 4-6 months
- Lipstick – 2-3 years {shorter in hot climates}.
The trays are stackable but I only ended up stacking the long tray on the left of the drawer so I wasn’t always having to take things in and out. I just take it out onto the counter when I start and put it back when I am done. Easy peasy!
If you don’t have any extra drawer space available, you can always purchase free standing drawers {like you would find for office organizaion} and keep this out on your counter. It will still keep things neatly tucked away for you while providing a ton of extra storage.
I like to keep my brushes stored upright so that they can dry after I wash them and to keep the bristles from getting squished. I had been keeping them in a vase with some stones but I didn’t really like keeping it out on the counter and it was a pain to transfer back and forth from under the counter. So option number two was to store them in these cute little stick on pockets from Elmer’s.
This organization has been working out great and it’s so much quicker and easier to apply my make-up in the mornings. And I can definitely use all the help I can get in the mornings! 🙂

Great tips here! I definitely need to get my makeup organized – it can get a little out of control and then makeup gets on everything! Thanks for this guide to getting it back in control.

First of all, your bathroom is beautiful! I love how you’ve decorated it. I love seeing how people organize their makeup – those pockets from Elmers are the cutest! I might need a few of those in my life.

You are not suppose to keep medicine or make up in the bathroom..the moisture ruins both. It also can cause your meds to decrease in potency causing more health issues…please organize both in a safer area! This also applies for medical kits!
Jenn Lifford says
Yes, for the medicine I have a couple of posts promoting that it should not be stored in the bathroom and we have ours stored in our kitchen. As for the make-up, it is best stored in a cool place; however, depending on the circulation and amount of steam used in the bathroom, it can still be okay to store it there if you have a place that is not affected by the steam and moisture. The bathroom that I have my make-up in doesn’t even have a shower so there is no concern about the heat. I think for a lot of people, they don’t really have an alternative place that is convenient to store their make-up, so a slightly shorter life span for the make-up may be worth it. I have had it in the bathroom with a shower in other places that I have lived and have never had any problems.

This looks great. What area of target has these containers? One of the problems with stores like Target is there are multiple places where they have good things like this… 🙂
Jenn Lifford says
They were with the bathroom accessories. I know what you mean about Target – it’s why I always spend way more money there than I should! 😉
Gina says
Exactly! Thanks!!!

Where did you get the drawer organizers for your make up? I couldn’t find a link for it
Jenn Lifford says
They’re the idesign acrylic drawer organizers and I bought them on Amazon. If you want a direct link, I have all of my bathroom cabinet organizers linked here…
