I am always a little sad when summer comes to an end, but once fall hits I remember all of the wonderful things that I love about it – the colors, the scents, the cool, refreshing air. It really is such a pretty season that I felt it deserved it’s own sign…
After I made my rustic Boo Halloween sign, I still had a bunch of stained garden stakes left over and decided to use them to frame an inexpensive canvas. The wood trim gives it so much more impact than a plain old canvas and adds to the rustic vibe that I like. Perfect for fall!
To make you own wood framed canvas, cut two garden stakes to the width of your canvas. For the 2 length pieces, you will need to cut them the length of your canvas plus the thickness of the wood x 2 {so your length piece will cover the width pieces on each end}. Just remember that canvases are not always perfectly square, so double check your measurements up along the side of the canvas just to be sure. 😉
Once your wood pieces are cut, sand them down until smooth and stain them {I used a dark walnut stain for mine}. Once the stain has dried, sand down the edges and corners and distress as you would like to give it a more weathered look. To attach the wood trim, simple use nails on the inside of the canvas to attach. Easy peasy!
Now you are ready to decorate your canvas. You could even use it for a photo frame and create some DIY photo canvases. The possibilities are endless! For my canvas, I chose to do a simple design with gold acrylic paint. After painting the heart, I added some gold glitter paint over top to give it a little extra sparkle. The dots around the frame were stamped with the eraser end of a pencil. Once the paint was dried, I used a Sharpie to write fall across the heart.
