It’s hard to believe that it is already October! We usually start off the month with a trip to one {or two!} of our local pumpkin patches. I always like to get in there before it gets too crowded with the Halloween rush and it is nice to be able to enjoy our pumpkins for a while before having to carve them up!
One of the other reasons that we like to visit the pumpkin patch is so that we can pick up one of our favorite fall treats – apple cider slushies! This year, I couldn’t wait for the pumpkin patch though so we decided to make our own at home…
I like these best with fresh apple cider but if you don’t have any available, you can easily mix up your own batch using some apple cider mix and this recipe from our Apple Cider Bar. Regular old apple juice also works {and may be preferred if you have little ones}. The trick to making the perfect slushie, is to first freeze the apple cider {or juice} first rather than just adding ice cubes to it. Just place the cider in a large Ziploc baggie and freeze it. When you are ready to blend up your slushie, run the bag under some warm water until you are able to break up the cider into fairly small chunks. Then just add to it to your blender and mix it up! If it is not mixing well, you can add a small amount of water or just use a fork to scrape down the sides of your chunks so that they start to break up easier.
For some added fall flair, I hollowed out some large Honeycrisp apples to use as a cup. To avoid leaks, leave the walls of the apple at least 1/4 inch thick and don’t go down too far towards the center of the core. And once you are done, you have a nice, cold apple to eat as well! 🙂
I had some Happy Fall Tags still left from our mini apple pies so I added those to the straws with some twine as well. {Just click over to the post if you would like to download your own.} It made for a fun {and healthy!} after school snack for the boys!Enjoy!!!
looks delicious!
They definitely are! 😉
We went to a pumpkin patch last weekend and had fresh apple cider. Now I’m craving apple cider slushies, thanks for the idea!

We always come home with a couple of cartons of apple cider when we go to the pumpkin patch. Love it!
Love this! Can you eat the apple cup after devouring the slushie…cuz I’m pretty sure my 7.5 month prego craving will require I do so. 🙂
Oh yes! It tastes great too as it is nice and chilled with a touch of cinnamon from the cider!
This looks so refreshing! Can’t wait to try it!
