For those of you that missed it, I have teamed up with some amazing bloggers to bring you a fun Spring Cleaning Challenge! We know that cleaning is never at the top of your list so we have put together some Spring Cleaning ideas and a fabulous giveaway to help inspire you along the way. If you missed the details on the challenge you can check out all of the info here. Today we are going to be talking more about how to clean the master bedroom.
I know for myself, our bedroom tends to get neglected when it comes to cleaning as I tend to focus more on areas that other people see more often. Since we spend roughly a third of our time in the bedroom however, it is important that we take some time to make our rooms a clean, comfortable and relaxing place to be.
So here is a little Spring Cleaning checklist for you to get you started!
{you can download a printable copy HERE}
First off, don’t be overwhelmed with the list! I think it sounds like more work than it actually is. I know some people like to do their Spring Cleaning all at once but I like to do just a little at a time. It will probably take me the whole month to get through all of the bedrooms in our house but it shouldn’t take too much extra time. Just do all of the bedding when you would normally change the sheets or spend an extra 15 minutes to give the room a really good dusting. Keep your list handy and do a task or two whenever you are tidying up.
Now let’s get cleaning! I’ve gone through the list and divided the tasks into manageable “mini projects” but do whatever works for you!

Now let’s get cleaning! I’ve gone through the list and divided the tasks into manageable “mini projects” but do whatever works for you!
Quick Tidy
Before you officially start your Spring Cleaning, grab three bags, boxes or laundry baskets. Place everything that does not belong in the bedroom into one of the baskets, place anything that you will be donating in another, and place all garbage in the third. Take any dirty laundry down to the washing machine and put away anything that is left in the room. NOTE: This is just a quick tidy looking at things that are on the floor, obviously out of place, or that you know that you want to get rid of. Save big organizing projects for later!
Dusting
Dusting
- Whenever you dust, start from the top of the room and work your way down and move from one side of the room to the other rather than going back and forth. This is the fastest way to get things done and will cut down on dust falling on areas that you have already cleaned.
- If you are dealing with a particularly dusty area, you might want to mist the area with water before wiping down to minimize the amount of airborne dust.
- Dust or wipe down everything including furniture, lamps, vents, above the door frames, light plates, knick knacks, etc.
Windows
- Take down and launder any window treatments and wipe down your blinds.
- Clean your windows {this is even better if done on a sunny day so you can see all of the streaks and grime}. I just use a Norwex window cloth and water but you could add a little vinegar for some extra cleaning power!
- Don’t forget about opening the window as well and cleaning the window tracks. You can see how I quickly clean our window tracks with our HomeRight Steam Cleaner {that you can win below!!} HERE.

Vacuuming
Vacuuming
- Vacuum any upholstery and lamp shades using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum.
- Thoroughly vacuum the carpet {or wash the floor} making sure to get underneath all furniture {especially the bed!} and into the corners.
- Don’t forget to look up and vacuum any cobwebs!
- Vacuum down the vents.
- Steam clean carpets or consider hiring a professional to give your carpets a good clean. If you are concerned with general carpet odors you can sprinkle the carpet with baking soda after vacuuming, leave overnight, and then vacuum up the following day. If you live in a very humid climate you may just want to give the carpet a light misting with white distilled vinegar as the baking soda can be difficult to get out of the carpet if damp.
The Bed
- Strip down your bed to the mattress.
- Wash the mattress cover and all of the bed linens in hot water to kill any dust mites. {Make sure you double check the labels for manufacturer’s instructions} Depending on the size of the duvet, you may need to take it down to the cleaners for the industrial-sized machine machines. When you are washing your pillows, it is best to do two at a time to keep the washing machine balanced without overloading it.
- Wipe down the bed frame with a damp cloth to remove any surface dirt.
- Clean your mattress {you can find detailed instructions HERE} and, if possible, allow it to air outside in the sunshine.

The Closet
The Closet
- Season changes are always a great time to go through and organize your closet as you can get rid of those items that you didn’t wear through the past season and go through all of your clothes for the upcoming season. Get rid of anything that does not fit, you do not love, or you just don’t wear for whatever reason. Be ruthless {or have someone come over and be ruthless for you!}
- Find more ideas and inspiration to organize your closet HERE and HERE. And don’t forget to enter the giveaway below for a chance to win a $1000 customized closet organization system from Easy Closets!

Everywhere!!! The garage is the worst. My kids clean their rooms and one in particular does not like excess things and has emptied all her no longer wanted toys into the garage. Yikes. 2nd to the garage would be the master closet it seems if it isn’t stashed in the garage its stashed in my closet. Why is this? I have no idea. 😉

I haven’t even started spring cleaning yet – EVERYTHING needs doing! Thanks for the chances to win – what awesome prizes!!!

I’ve been following along each day and you have inspired me along with all the bloggers. We have lived in this house since June of 1990. There is always a project in the works. Currently the kitchen is half wrecked so you know how goes the rest 🙂 This week I have been working to reuse the things coming out of the kitchen and getting those smaller things done. The kitchen is much better now, even if it’s only half way done. Thanks so much!!!

My basement is probably the area that could use much more than a spring cleaning. When we moved 5 years ago it was mostly the kids’ playroom and it still is, but the kids have gotten older so I really need to go through and weed out the baby toys. I’d really love to organize the two storage rooms down there as well. One of these days I will find the extra motivation to get it all done!
Erin Branscom says
I really need to spring clean my basement and laundry room. 🙂
Dani says
My whole house needs help, but our master bedroom has the attic access and has become a dumping ground for things that need to go up there. Not to mention our new kittens have all of their stuff in our room (letterbox and food/water dishes). Oh, and it’s a decor nightmare…

Working on my closets today!

LOL…what area of my house that DOESN’T need spring cleaning??? I guess I should start in the laundry room since it’s the smallest room but we use it or at least see it every single day!

Everywhere! I feel so overwhelmed. But the bedrooms are awful — the worst is our couch, area rug and upstairs carpeting is disgusting!! I feel like I’m living in crud even when everything is picked up because of the dirty rugs and couch. Need help! LOL :/

I am working on the master bedroom. I need to remove a LOT of things that have accumulated there. Move winter stuff to storage in the basement in Rubbermaid tote boxes (clear ones, so I can see what is in there). It has taken me SO FAR two weeks. I am donating things to GoodWill to clear out stuff that someone else might want.

Everywhere! I’ve been working at it slowly but with 4 boys I have a long ways to go.

I’m in the middle of organizing my entire home. Trying to find a “home” for all of the stuff we have can be hard for a family of 7, 1/4 acre garden, chickens, honeybees, and breeding rabbits. It’s overwhelming to say the least. I happen to be gearing up to work on our master bedroom and closet. The home office is a work in progress as well. It’s all a work in progress….

Great tips for the bedrooms. I plan to tackle my boys’ room first. Now that the school year is coming to a close in the next month and a half, it’s time to clean out their closet, change out the clothes and declutter all those little trinkets they seem to collect.

Iwould have to say the garage. Our house is for sale, so it’s pretty clean and gets cleaned daily. I really love having my house for sale. It’s all uncluttered and organized. The garage, meh, it could use some work. We work at it, but I continue to do wood working projects etc.
