And then the bad news. The electrician discovered that they actually couldn’t get the electrical boxes and wires out of the wall without tearing down the whole wall {this was definitely not in our budget}. And, according to code, we were not allowed to cover up the boxes. So in the end, we were left with two nice metal plates on our wall and no paneling. **sigh**
So, after all of that, here is where things are at on my disappointing wall.
So back to that darn wall… I had to have something to put over the metal light covers. I played around with some picture frames but ended up going with these candle sconces. They are okay but really not what I wanted. I moved the picture frame from the before picture to another wall and added the starburst above the center of the bed.
Now that it is done, I am still not totally loving the wall. I don’t like switching up plans so I am not sure if I really don’t like the wall or if it is just because it wasn’t the original plan. I have thought about stenciling the wall using either this one from our master bathroom
or this one from my craft room.
Now the problem with stenciling is basically just the time involved. Both of these rooms probably took me at least 8 hours to stencil and they are about half of the size of the bedroom wall. Not really a project that I would look forward to but maybe I will suddenly get faster. I am also very tired of painting and am a little nervous that I will stencil it and not like it.
The second option that I considered was doing a lower board and batten that would end just below the light boxes. I would still need to cover the light boxes up with either the sconces or a frame of some sort though and just can’t envision this looking too great.
The third option, obviously, is to just leave things be. Maybe I will grow to love things a little more? I sure would love to be done with that room!
What are your thoughts? Any other ideas? I’d sure love to know what you think!
Have a great week!

Have you thought about maybe only stenciling a certain portion and then framing the design out with trim. You could possibly do this behind the starburst…not that I’m a decorator by any means. Just thinking of how you can do less stenciling on a larger wall. 🙂 Megan

I think it looks lovely! You could certainly do the board and batten under the lights. I’ve also seen whole walls done with pallet wood or old barn wood remnants. Have fun!

I LOVE those candle sconces! I really think they tie in nicely with the overhead light.
Kristin @ Simply Klassic Home says
I think you should try the board and batten below the lights.
Look at the last pic in this post: http://lifeandstyleatoz.blogspot.com/2010/02/b-b-board-and-batten-part-one.html
Or this one: http://www.avintagevineonline.com/2011/11/my-master-bedroom-mdf-paneled-wall-and.html
I like how the stencil is above the panels and you could work those light fixtures into the stencils.
Good luck!!!

I actually like how your room looks. Love the colors, the scones, the light fixture. Maybe you should leave it alone for now~

I like your bedroom, I wouldn’t change anything. But if you really want the paneled wall I would suggest doing the stenciling maybe on a smaller scale so it won’t take up so much time. Like make the squares larger so that it covers more area per design.

Can’t believe it’s the same room! I LOVE it just as it is, painting the furniture black was a great idea!

I imagine that the wiring could be tapped in at the sconce and then wired down a few feet to a switch just above the nightstand so that you could still turn them on and off from bed. It should be possible to tie off the current wiring and keep it in the box then run a new set up from a switch and tie it into an outlet for power. As long as this is done in a daisy chain the switch shouldn’t mess up the actual outlet.

Jenn. My vote- Leave it for now. See if it grows on you- I absolutely LOVE it! If you want to add something, hit a stencil- you can always see if it’s the look your going for! But oh my goodness I LOVE that Light Fixture! And the Starburst is the Perfect touch!

Where did you get the ceiling light fixture? Love it!

The filigree on the light fixtures ties them all together beautifully, a great solution. Aren’t building codes a pain in the patooty?!

Kristen posted this link and said to look at the bottom picture .. ( http://lifeandstyleatoz.blogspot.com/2010/02/b-b-board-and-batten-part-one.html ) I think this is a fantastic plan B. Consider going as high as your ‘plates’ are to cover and simply stand something on the built ‘shelf’ that will cover it up. I would mean loosing your sconces (which I love btw) but really I think it would be a great fix and give you back a lot of what you wanted when you started out. LOVE your room

The bathroom and bedroom are well designed. They are not lavish but simple and beautiful.

I think I saw earlier today at Shabby Creek Cottage (not sure what blog I was looking at, I was playing catch-up), that the family did a board/batten treatment in their bathroom — minuts the boards! They only used the battens and trimmed out the walls, caulked the trim along the walls and then painted the trim and the interior walls where the “board” should be. Looks great! You might be able to do the same thing on your bedroom wall — don’t put up paneling, just put up the battens — depending upon how smooth or rough the finish of your wall is. Then, you can just hang pictures over those wall plates or use the solution you have now, which I think looks great.

Hello Jenn,
I was shocked when I realized the photo with the black bed was your room. It looks like a magazine. I had to scroll back to the earlier picture to compare bed linens. Your room is elegant and peaceful.
You should wait a while and see how you feel about your makeover. It may grow on you.
Good work!

I’m hosting a linky party for room remodels and would love for you to link up your bedroom. I also REALLY love your craft room. I know you said it took forever but the stencil you used in the craft room would look awesome on the wall behind the bed. Tough decisions, good luck:)
Here’s the link for the party:

Have you thought about just getting new sconces? They make really pretty ones now (I just googled it to see if I could find some pretty ones for you, but omg, there are too many choices!) that have a switch on them that you can flip from bed. That way you could still board and batten your whole wall, have lights that you could turn on/off from bed, and not be left with ugly metal boxes to deal with! I dunno… just a thought.

WOW. Jen!! I am jealous. I seriously love that light fixture. But I understand. We’ve had some frustrating issues with electrical issues in our new home this week too. But I love your room!!

I love the way it looks as is, but I know it can be hard if you have something set in your mind about how you want it to look. Maybe you could leave it for a while to see if it grows on you and then add the board and batten below the sconces if you still really don’t like it!

Honestly, you should really remodel your room. It’s way different from the other rooms of your house. The wall panels that you want looks pretty wicked, and I say, go for it. However, I think, it requires a lot of work and labor. If you’re really into that print, then what’s stopping you? Just think, after stressing yourself out with those, you’ll have a beautiful wall and a newly remodeled bedroom!

Hi I think the color balance is off you need more black or very dark value on top, maybe the starburst is making it unnaturally symmetrical. How about adding black touches to sconces and starburst to tie in black strong elements into top of room? Also possibly offset the starburst higher and to side, think sun, then fill in with a design to compliment your bed designs but more stylized ? Overall your room is beautiful great job!
Karmi says
Lol, I just noticed date on post, what did you end up doing?i think a border in silver black might also work on its own, but I still think sconces and lamps are too drab….maybe a touch of lines in silver and black to bring in border around room? It just seems to not appear defined, like the molding in your other rooms, maybe black moldings? Let us know !!
