Okay guys. I have been on a mission this past month to get my nails looking a little more presentable. I have really never had nice nails – my nail beds have always been small and my nails are constantly breaking and peeling. Back in the “before I had kids” days {AKA when I had more time and more money}, I used to get my nails done every few weeks with a gel overlay and I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, that was one of the first things to go once Matthew was born, and my nails have definitely taken a lot of abuse since then.
This month, I had a chance to try out Trind’s Keratin Nail Treatment Kit and have been taking a little extra time each day to show my nails a little love. The Trind Keratin Nail Treatment kit provides a chemical free solution for thin, brittle and chipped nails and can treat even the most sensitive nails. I have finished about 3 weeks out of the recommended 4-6 week plan and already notice a big improvement in the peeling and strength of my nails. My nails feel much stronger and they are not as thin as they were previously. It’s a little hard to tell from the pictures, but the peeling is now almost completely gone {I just have a little bit still left on my thumbs} Because of my work, I need to keep my nails short, but they are so much healthier now.
To use the system, the Keratin Nail Restorer needs to be applied daily followed by a coat of the Keratin Nail Protector. Both dry quite quickly so the whole process only takes about 5-10 minutes. Each day, the previous coat should be removed using the Trind Acetone-free Nail Polish Remover before applying your new coat. A 4-6 week daily treatment plan is recommended {although the improvements can be noted earlier} with a weekly application recommended for maintenance.
If you like, you can even apply a nail polish over the Keratin Nail Protector. Trind has a variety of fun and trendy color choices in their Caring Color Nail Polish line and I loved this metallic blue, Surf’s Up. Beach time anyone? 🙂
In addition to the Keratin Treatment Kit, I have put together a few easy tips for you to help you get those beautiful, healthy nails. Just a few minutes per day of nail love can make a big difference!
5 Tips on How To Get Healthy Nails
1. Trim Nails Properly.
If you are just starting to grow your nails out, trim them all down to the same length using nail clippers or nail scissors. Follow the natural curve of your fingers – nails that are too rounded can lead to ingrown nails. Using a fine grit nail file, file nails gently to smooth away the rough areas at the tips. Make sure to just file in ONE DIRECTION – using a back and forth motion will tear the nail fibers and weaken your nails. Regularly trim nails every 2-3 weeks and keep a nail file handy to smooth on snags that may occur. Avoid biting your nails at all costs!! Biting actually tears the nail and will weaken it all the way down to the nail bed and the saliva from your mouth will soften and weaken your nails even further.
2. Moisturize. Moisturize. Moisturize.
Dry nails can easily break and peel so it is important to keep your hands and nails moisturized. Apply a moisturizer at least a couple of times per day {as well as following hand washing if possible} making sure to rub it into your nails and cuticles as well as your hands. It can help your cuticles look better and will help protect your nails from breaking due to dryness. Oils such as almond oil, olive oil, and jojoba oil as well as vitamin E are particular good for your nails and can be massaged in directly to the cuticles and nail beds. I keep a bottle of moisturizer beside the soap bottle by all of our sinks and always have a little jar to take along in my purse as well.
3. Eat a Well Balanced Diet.
We all know that “we are what we eat” and this especially true when it comes to our nails. If your diet is lacking in certain nutrients, your nails can become dry, ridged, discolored and weak. Eating foods rich in protein, biotin, zinc, and vitamins B, C, K, can help your nails grown faster and stronger. So drink up that water, eat those leafy greens, and make sure you are getting enough of your favorite proteins!
4. Avoid Acetone Based Nail Polish Remover.
Acetone based nail polish removers strip the nails and will leave them brittle and prone to splitting and peeling. Be sure to check those old nail polish remover bottles and toss ’em out if they are not acetone-free! If you are looking for a new one, Trind has a great oil and acetone-free nail polish remover that is very mild on your nails.
5. Don’t Use Your Nails as Tools.
While we are never going to eliminate all of the abuse that we do to our nails, we can try to minimize it. Don’t confuse your nails with chisels, pry bars, can openers or scrapers – there is a reason those tools were invented! Keep a little tool box handy around the house so these are easy to grab and you won’t be tempted to just use your nails. If you are going to be using harsh chemicals, try wearing gloves or, at the very least, remember to wash and moisturize your hands as soon as you are done!
