It is the final week of the boys’ school and I think that I am more excited than the kids! I just love those summer vacation months where there are no hectic morning routines and evening homework battles {and a little more sleep is always good too!}.
One of the boys’ favorite summer activities is going camping and I have been coming up with a few activities that we can bring along with us on our adventures. A couple of weeks ago I shared this outdoor scavenger hunt and s’mores treat over at Design Dazzle’s summer camp, so today I thought that I would post it here for those of you that missed it. Don’t worry if you are not a camper though – these work well for backyard campers or a nature walk too!
To keep things simple, I printed out the scavenger hunt directly onto a paper bag so the kids would have something to collect all of their goodies in. When you are printing it out, use some washi tape or other light adhesive to stick the paper bag in the center of a regular sheet of paper. Make sure that you have the front of the bag facing upwards {you don’t want to print on the part that will be the bottom of the bag}. Depending on your printer, you will likely need to put the paper in the printer with the bag facing down, top end first.
If you don’t want to print out the checklist onto a paper bag, I have also created a full page printable. If you choose, you can just check things off the list when you see them rather than actually collecting everything to keep things even simpler!

Kids always like rewards, so once the hunt is done, they can sit down and relax with a s’mores treat!
Package up some s’mores bags with graham crackers, a couple of giant marshmallows and some mini chocolate bars. The Mr. Goodbars with the peanuts are my favorite!
If you aren’t really a camper or there happens to be a fire ban where you are camping, you can still enjoy some s’mores fun with a little mix of Teddy Grahams, chocolate chips, and mini-marshmallows. This also makes a good little snack for the kids if you are heading out for a walk on the trails.

Just download the topper that you would like, trim it down with a paper cutter and add it to the top of a standard plastic sandwich bag. I stapled mine on to secure and then added some twine to the top for more of a decorative look. Don’t forget to add names to the back so you don’t mix up the bags!
I hope you all have a wonderful summer and have some time to explore outside with your kiddos!

I love this idea!! I am in charge of snacks for the week leading up to Earth Day. I wanted to come up with cute snacks that went along with the Earth Day theme. I am going to send trail mix as a snack in the paper bag to school and then the kids can take the bag with them and fill it with outdoor treasures. Thanks!!!
Jenn Lifford says
That’s a great idea! I hope they have fun with it!
Shari M. says
I loved your idea and I was wondering if you had any problems printing the bags? Any tricks to keep them from jamming up the printer?
Jenn Lifford says
You can lightly tape the bags down to a standard sized piece of paper and just guide it through the printer. I didn’t have any troubles doing it this way. 🙂
Kimberly Cornwell says
I can’t them them to download, do you have to give me access? Birthday party tomorrow and was planning to use these and now in a panic as I can’t seem to access them! help
Jenn Lifford says
Are you using Chrome as your browser? Sometimes Google Drive can be a pain with other browsers.
Jess says
I am using these for my son’s outdoor adventure birthday party in a couple of days. The mini-smores bags are so cute and I have the scavenger hunt things ready as well. I found pencils that are made from sticks, so that should add a nice outdoor element. Thanks for your ideas.
Jenn Lifford says
Oh those pencils sound so cute! I hope your son has a wonderful birthday and thanks so much for letting me know that you’re using the printables!
Heather says
Thank you so much for sharing! The kids at our family reunion loved going on the scavenger hunt!
It saved me some printing time to insert the jpeg image in a blank publisher file and flip it upside down- no worries about the bag flap or the open end causing jams ( which inspired my trick)
Jenn Lifford says
Glad your family enjoyed it! Thanks for the tip! 🙂
