Hello animal lovers! Did you know that today, October 4 is World Animal Day? It is a day to celebrate those animals that have made their way into our hearts and homes as well as to drive awareness to animal rights and welfare. Our Golden Doodle pup, Blue, is really quite excited about all of this!
A few weeks ago I had the chance to learn more about a couple of amazing organizations devoted to improving the life of marine animals through Dawn’s Day in the Wildlife program. Last week I shared some of my experiences at The Marine Mammal Centre and today I wanted to talk a little bit more about the other organization – International Bird Rescue.
International Bird Rescue is devoted to rescuing and rehabilitating injured aquatic sea birds around the world. Their two centers in California rescue over 5,000 birds every year and they have also led rescue efforts in over 200 oil spills around the world.
I am sure that you have all seen the Dawn commercials showing the oil-covered birds being washed in Dawn dish soap. The effectiveness of Dawn on cleaning wildlife was actually something that was discovered by International Bird Rescue way back in 1978 when they received a grant to test all major dish soaps for cleaning birds. They discovered that Dawn worked the best at cutting through the grease and oils while still remaining gentle enough for the bird’s feathers. Since that time, Dawn has embraced their role in wildlife rescue and has donated thousands of bottles of dishwashing liquid as well as 4.5 million dollars to their wildlife rescue partners.
In addition to washing our dishes with Dawn, we also use it for stain removal in our laundry, use it to clean our bathrooms, and use it to wash our favorite fur baby. It makes him so nice and fluffy!
Unfortunately, he loves to dig so he often looks more like this…
A couple of days ago, International Bird Rescue and Dawn partnered up again for another Day in the Wildlife event {along with Adrian Grenier from Entourage and Keegan Allen of Pretty Little Liars!} to honor the amazing volunteers at International Bird Rescue and highlight the release of some of their feathered patients back into the wild. Happy World Animal Day and remember that we can all make a difference!
